Losing a great deal of weight through hard work, healthy eating and exercise is a major accomplishment, and should be celebrated. But in everyday life, and especially in the entertainment industry where all eyes are on you, it can be something that isn’t always met with the greatest amount of support. Losing a few pounds always impresses people, but when you pop up a whole new you and drop many pounds, not everyone will always be so excited. Either you’re too big or you’re too skinny for some, and this is something we’ve noticed in conversations surrounding the transformations of Jennifer Hudson, Rick Ross and even Jordin Sparks too. And now, Ledisi says that she encountered people who weren’t as stoked about the changes she was going through. But she tells Sister 2 Sister in their August issue that for every detractor, there have been plenty more people cheering her on:

“It’s funny because when I started losing weight and stuff, there were some people predominantly women that were, like, shocked. And I was shocked that they weren’t happy for me. Then, I realized that’s just a few of them. There’s a lotta women who are happy for me and my evolution. So it’s a great thing.”

Ledisi is looking absolutely amazing these days, and when we spoke to her late last year, she said that she decided to drop some pounds after realizing that she wanted to improve herself and increase her happiness.

“When I had my last relationship, when you lose stuff, you start losing things and you start to think, what do I want to do better with myself? How can I improve myself? It was basically me deciding, what would enhance your life and make you have more fun? Because you’re not having enough fun. So I decided to go back to dance class and in dance class you’re forced to look in the mirror. And you’re rolling and moving and like ‘I don’t like that no more, I want to change it [laughs].’  So I started working on me and it forced me to work on me. If forced me to look in: Why do I eat the things that I eat? Why do I do what I do? It forced me to look at myself and I felt beautiful before but I feel more because I’m taking care of my body. I’m drinking more water, and I just did it for me.”
