Brandy
This R&B singer/ reality TV star once struggled with an eating disorder earlier in her career. Now Brandy maintains a no-meat diet, fluctuating between vegetarianism and veganism. The star said she’s going back to vegan in 2011, getting rid of animal by-products like eggs and dairy, in an effort to be healthier.
Phylicia Rashad
Madame Rashad has been a vegetarian since she was a teenager. Her mother became a vegetarian when she met a Hindu professor who spoke about the benefits of an animal-less diet. She then passed the recipes down to her children. In 1988 Vegetarian Times reported that her diet and meditation gave her inner peace.
Andre 3000
Andre Benjamin is constantly defying Hip Hop stereotypes. Not only does the rapper wear clothes more suited for a spunky 1950’s Harvard grad, he’s managed to avoid the hyper-masculine, overindulgent lifestyle associated with Hip Hop by eliminating meat from his diet. It’s paid off. The eccentric musician was named PETA’s sexiest vegetarian celebrity in 2004.
Angela Bassett
With beautiful skin and muscle tone to die for, Angela Bassett makes vegetarianism look good! This successful actress, wife and mother of twins says she’s not here to judge anyone else’s diet but prefers vegan and raw food choices. She snacks on grapes, celery, and egg whites.
Cicely Tyson
This 77-year-old actress is the picture of longevity. With an active career and great skin, she’s got to be doing something right. No doubt a lot of that has to do with what she’s putting in her body. In addition to the vegetarian diet Tyson also avoids caffeine and alcohol.
Erykah Badu
It’s no surprise that this Neo Soul earth mother uses the soil’s greenery to nourish her body. Badu has been some type of vegetarian for over 20 years, transitioning over to vegan at the halfway point. Badu, who is also a holistic health practitioner, is raising her three children on the same diet.
Forest Whitaker
This seasoned actor and director is looking like half of himself these days. Years ago, Whitaker and his daughter True recorded a public service announcement for PETA promoting his vegetarian lifestyle. After he gained 70 pounds to play Idi Amin in The Last King of Scotland he went full vegan.
Ruben Studdard When this R&B crooner first stepped on the scene he was dubbed the “teddy bear;” and even though he’s still just as lovable, he’s a little less fluffy. Studdard figured if he changed his eating habits he could live a little bit longer. He started off as a vegetarian before making the transition toward the vegan lifestyle. The American Idol winner says his new lifestyle has helped his voice as well. Studdard says dairy products cause mucus build up and can interfere with your throat. (Yuck!)
Prince Don’t you want to look this good in your 50s? The androgynous musical genius has been known to crave fresh vegetables at 3 am. Being that he’s royalty, he’ll get what he wants. The artist started his road to vegetarianism by eliminating red meat, then eventually doing away with anything that had parents. Prince’s diet is said to be based on the Bible. He applies the commandment “Thou shalt not kill” to the animal kingdom as well.
