Stick To The Booth Boo: Singers Who Are Terrible Live Performers
You don’t have to be a good singer to have a music career — just ask anyone on our list of 15 terrible live performers. Before you go on though, turn down the volume on your PC and grab a pen so you can start crossing people off of your must-see concert list.
No one expects Ashanti to be able to blow. But we have a feeling that Ashanti believes her own hype. Why else would she tackle Whitney Houston’s “I Have Nothing?” It was one of her worst performances to date and that’s saying something.
Total can barely hold it together in the studio so we’re not sure why anyone showed up to their live performances in the first place. My favorite part of this terrible live performance of “Can’t You See” is when Diddy asks the audience to “help them sing” aka “help him drown out their nasal, off-key voices”.
Al B. Sure
Al B. Sure has earned himself a solid place among the worst performers in history. This edition of “Off On Your Own Girl” from 1998 is hilariously terrible. You ever hear someone singing along with their headphones in and they have no idea how terrible and off-key they sound? It’s kind of like that. Even the backup singers sound bad.
Milli Vanilli didn’t let terrible singing voices stop them from getting to the top of the charts. Their label just hired two guys to sing on the album and Milli Vanilli lip synced the lyrics on the album…until the album skipped and they ran off stage embarrassed.
After Milli Vanilli flopped, we thought lip syncing on stage was done. But Ashlee Simpson proved us wrong when her album stopped and she jigged her way off stage. Awkward.
We all know Miley can’t dance, but she can’t sing live either. Check out her butcher one of her hit singles on the “Today” show. You may want to turn the volume all the way down on this one. Miley sounds like a warped cassette tape and doesn’t manage to sing a single note on key.
Some people love Rihanna’s voice and some people can’t stand it. But whatever your opinion, there’s little chance that Rihanna will go down as one of the best live singers of all time. In this video, she’s atrocious. And before you say “but she was just 15” check out this more recent live clip where no one can understand the lyrics that go along with the notes she’s butchering.
This one is tough to understand because we know Mariah can sang. But in the last six months or so, her live performances have been terrible at best. Her live performance of “Beautiful” on “Good Morning America” was so bad the single plummeted down the Apple’s iTunes chart. Now she’s taken to lip syncing her live performances and lying about it.
Cassie’s 2006 live performance of “Me & U” on BET was so bad that she didn’t perform live again for another six years. And when she came back to “106 & Park” to perform “Kingdom of Hearts”, she was only a little bit better.
Katy Perry is a terrible live singer. Luckily, you rarely get to hear her sing live. She’s famous for lip syncing her lyrics to spare our ears.
Alicia is another famous singer who fell off. She used to perform well live. But now her music and her pipes have fallen off. Her Super Bowl and Grammy performances were abysmal. And during her concerts, the audience is busy tweeting about how she can’t sing.
The Black Eyed Peas
Their Super Bowl performance. Enough said (Also, most of their other performances).
Just like Cassie, Ciara bombed on BET. If you know you need pitch correction, why agree to a live performance in the first place? Her live performance of “DUI” was pitchy, boring and just plain hard to watch. If you’re a Cassie fan, just by the album and skip out on the concert.
Lana Del Rey
Lana Del Rey is so terrible live that she may go down in history as being the worst SNL performer ever. Just check out what happened when she tried to sing her song “Blue Jeans.”
At least Lana knows she’s terrible. This is what she had to say about her live performances:
“I think like, the people who have been listening to my music for a little while know that I’m more of a writer and, like, a studio singer…You can’t expect too much from my show.”
No terrible live performance list would be complete without Britney’s disturbingly bad comeback performance. She slumped around stage, lip synced and wore an outfit two sizes too tight. And I know I’m not the only one who thinks that she was on drugs.
