(Chicago Sun Times) — Foreclosure filings catapulted 66.4 percent in Cook County in August from a year earlier, according to RealtyTrac’s latest report, but the spike is linked to a 2009 law that delayed foreclosure filings last year.

An Illinois law that took effect in April 2009 required lenders to give delinquent homeowners up to an extra 90 days before starting the foreclosure process, RealtyTrac spokesman Daren Blomquist said.
