Just last week, I posted K. Michelle’s V.S.O.P. lyric video as our evening jam on Facebook and Twitter. And many of you dug it. With a sample from the Chi Lites’ “That’s How Long” (made more famous by Jay-Z’ “December 4th”), the song features epic sounding strings and horns.
And though the music sounds like something fit for a superhero theme song, it’s a love song. K Michelle belts about the romantic night she’s planning for her man. The chorus goes like this:
We gon’ light some candles tonight
We gon’ do whatever you like
Got some Henney chillin’ on ice
Hope you make the rest of my life
After listening and watching the lyric video a few times, I thought isn’t that nice? Seeing the romantic side of K. Michelle is a welcome change from the woman who clearly has an issue with anger management.
But then I watched the official video and it was a completely story. In the Benny Boom directed video, again we see a confrontational K. Michelle arguing with her man all while singing about the history they have together and what she’s going to do for him when he gets home. The way this video is looking though, who knows if homeboy is going to come home to her or not. It just doesn’t seem to fit the lyrics. Honestly, the only lyrical indicator that their relationship might not be all that great is when K. Michelle confesses:
Even if you tell me it’s over
I’ll pretend you told me I’m you’re all
Sounds a little sick, no?
But in an interview K. Michelle shed a bit more light on the song’s meaning:
“It’s that old boo thang that you can’t get rid of, just that very special old pal. It’s a feel-good record for the dudes and for the ladies. Pop some bottles, have some fun.”
All in all the original lyric video is more in tune with what I thought song was about; but this version is with the arguing, shady leading man and K. Michelle’s jerky dance moves are just a little rough around the edges. The song still goes though and at the end of the day that’s all that matters.
