Grab the tissue and half pint of cookie dough ice cream. With classic sisterhood movies playing all day on your big screen one rainy Sunday afternoon, you simply can’t go wrong. The mere mention of these movies will have you dusting off old DVDs, yanking on some sweats, and cuddling in that Lazyboy, ready to revisit your favorite film with your girls.
The Women Of Brewster Place
The women living in the rundown housing projects on Brewster Place pumped it full of love, gossip, grief and joy. The black women are strong-willed and pitted against the dreadful brick wall and weak, oppressive black men. Oprah Winfrey’s matriarchal role comforted us as character Lucielia as we wept over the loss of her baby, Serena.
Set It Off
No one wanted to see the four black bank-robbing sisters fast paced, criminal lifestyle come to an end, but it was inevitable. Cleo’s prints on the tossed CDs and surveillance cameras were dead giveaways. The former cleaning ladies’ fate came to an end, with only Stony getting away, looking like a sad puppy as the bus took off at the end. Even thought the girls were committing crimes, we couldn’t help but empathize with their motivations and Stony being left all alone in the end.
Waiting To Exhale
Remember the sister swag walk Angela Bassett delivers as she sashays away from lighting her cheating husband’s car and all his belongings aflame? That left us hi-fiving our friend, dog — whoever was in the room at the time! The experiences of these four well-off sisters and their issues with men had us identifying, crying, and laughing through the whole movie.
Real Women Have Curves
Working at the sewing factory was not Ana’s idea of starting the next chapter in her life. College on her mind, she has nothing but contempt for the mindless work, but soon learns about teamwork and solidarity while spending time there. She fights to find her place as an American Chicana.
The Women
After leaving her cheating husband, a woman unites with other well-to-do women at a resort. This movie reeks of gossip, heartache and strong friendships – themes that will never grow old.
Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants
It’s a wonder this one pair of jeans fit each of the four friends so perfectly, especially America Ferera’s curvy shape, but it did. The four friends vow to keep in contact after their lives take off in different directions and use the pair of jeans as a connector between each of them.
The Joy Luck Club
This movie follows the life journey of four Asian American women and their daughters as they try to guide them in the right directions. The daughters come to deeply understand the choices and sacrifices that their mothers’ had to make.
Beaches
Boy this movie captured the essence of true friendship with all its ups and downs and hints of jealousies and resentments. We wept uncontrollably during Bette Midler’s rendition of Wind Beneath My Wings.
Steel Magnolias
Shelby’s death and her mom’s breakdown at the funeral are classic scenes from the original Steel Magnolias that keep us coming back to this film anytime we channel surf and see that it’s playing.
