Last but certainly not least…Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. was founded on November 12, 1922 on the campus of Butler University in Indianapolis, IN. With many community service ventures like Habitat for Humanity and Cancer Awareness, Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority will continue to increase community involvement. The following celeb members are honorary and official members of the organization.
Academy Award Winner Hattie McDaniel is a member of Sigma Gamma Rho. During Hattie McDaniel’s time in film, she also was a singer, who was considered the first woman to sing on Radio in 1915. She not only has a Hollywood Walk of Fame star for the Motion Picture industry, but also for the Radio industry. She unfortunately passed away in 1952 from Breast Cancer.
From being “Lyte As A Rock” to wanting a “Ruffneck,” Mc Lyte has many entrepreneurial efforts with her brand, along with being a honorary member of Sigma Gamma Rho. She has been a Voice-Over artist for over 10 years, hosts a radio show on Cafe Mocha Radio, is STILL one of the hottest Female MCs around AND just secured a new gig with the STARZ network. Sky’s the limit for MC Lyte!
“Not My Daddy” singer Kelly Price has given us some beautiful gems of music, from gospel to R&B and who knew she was a member of Sigma Gamma Rho? From being a vocalist for the likes of Diddy and Mariah Carey to her releasing new music in multiple genres, Kelly Price is a dedicated servant to her fans as well as her Sorority. Now, we hope there is something to come from The Queen Project, the group started with her, Tamia and Deborah Cox…
Anna Maria Horsford
Who can forget Dee Baxter from “The Wayans Bros.” or Thelma Frye from “Amen?” Those memorable characters are featured on two of the many shows Anna Maria Horsford was featured cast member. Her continued success and achievements is why she became a member of Sigma Gamma Rho. You can catch her on an episode of “New Girl” and in an upcoming TV movie called “Living Loaded.”
Vanessa Bell Armstrong
Gospel singer and Stellar Award winner Vanessa Bell Armstrong represents for the Royal Blue and Gold, Sigma Gamma Rho! She released her album, Timeless, in 2011 and is working on new music with Matthew Knowles’ label, Music World Gospel and a new book, in 2012.
“Forgive and Forget” was a favorite talk show of mine, especially since Mother Love was the host. The show lasted from 1998 to 2000 and since then she has been a strong advocate in the community for Diabetes, AETNA Insurance and of course, a member of Sigma Gamma Rho.
Drucilla Winters, played by actress Victoria Rowell in “The Young and The Restless,” is a strong advocate for her sorority, Sigma Gamma Rho. Above, she is with her Sorors on a book signing tour for her book entitled The Women Who Raised Me in 2007. She is also an activist for children in foster care. Dedication and giving back is what her sorority is about, and she is about the same thing!
Tonya Lee Williams
Fellow Y&R actress, Tonya Lee Williams is many things besides becoming a member of Sigma Gamma Rho. In case you didn’t know, she founded and created the ReelWorld Film Festival in Toronto; is from Canada, but was born in London. She played Drucilla’s sister, (played by her Soror Victoria Rowell), Olivia Hastings, on The Young and The Restless for 10 years!
Jazz vocalist Maysa Leak, from Baltimore Maryland and featured vocalist in the British band, Incognito, is a member of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority. Inc. Her smooth, silky voice is constantly heard on Jazz radio stations across the country and released her CD, “Motions of Love” in late 2011.
Remember the married couple on “Martin” who were always arguing with each other in front of people? Well, actress Ella English played the wife, Mrs. Booker, as well as Jamie Foxx’s Aunt Helen King on “The Jamie Foxx Show” and Mary Lou Wentz on “Good Luck, Charlie.” Her activism in Big Sisters of Los Angeles shows why she was picked to be a Sister of Sigma Gamma Rho, Sorority, Inc.
