The National Coalition against Domestic Violence reports that approximately 1.3 million women are victims of physical assault by an intimate partner each year and that one in every four women will experience domestic violence in her lifetime. In some cases, as recently illustrated by a disgruntled man in New Mexico going to a fiber optics facility in Albuquerque and reportedly killing three individuals that included his girlfriend, domestic violence can ultimately lead to death.

It is tragic that many women have to walk on egg shells on a daily basis to avoid making their husband or partner angry. Whether the man battles with control, selfishness, superiority or possessiveness, acts of domestic violence are extremely cowardly. Here are three purported tough guys who have allegedly engaged in physically abusing their loved one and who desperately need peace, humility and forgiveness in their hearts:

Mel Gibson

At one point during this year, it appeared that Gibson was putting out more mix tapes than Funkmaster Flex or Drake could ever produce. But, instead of hip hop lyrics and nice beats, Gibson’s tapes were filled with descriptive and nasty rhetoric aimed at his former girlfriend, Oksana Grigorieva, whom he reportedly abused physically. Racially-tinged references to African-Americans and Hispanics and condescending remarks such as, “You’re a mentally deprived idiot,” “I own you,” “You don’t count,” and “You’re a Slore” revealed a darker side of Gibson that was largely unknown.

Matt Barnes

Barnes, who played for the Orlando Magic last season, was one of those role players who appeared to consistently step up when Dwight Howard and Vince Carter had off nights. Now, we find that Barnes has a different type of magic- namely, pimp magic. It appears that he has been “pimp-slapping” more people than Bishop Don “Magic” Juan during this summer. Just a few weeks ago, Barnes who recently signed with the Los Angeles Lakers recently slapped an opposing coach during a summer basketball league game, because the coach was “talking noise” to him and was getting on his nerves. Now, Barnes who obviously has taken this anger home has allegedly slapped and abused his girlfriend, which resulted in his arrest.

Floyd Mayweather

Certainly, Mayweather will go do in history as one of the best fighters to step foot in a boxing ring. But, he has come under a lot of criticism for his failure to fight Manny Pacquiao and for referring to Pacquiao as a “yellow chump” and a “midget.” Now, in addition to his racially-tinged remarks, Mayweather has been arrested for allegedly abusing his girlfriend. So, there you have it. Abusing “midgets” and women is really not a good look.

Domestic violence is the diametric opposite of abundant living.  These above-mentioned gentlemen and so many others need to know that real, tough guys cherish their spouse or partner like golden treasure and refrain from such cowardly acts.
