Kym Rogers is the founder of Brooklyn Sweet Spot, a chic dessert shop located in the Fort Greene neighborhood that serves fresh baked sweets from scratch using wholesome ingredients. While the busy entrepreneur’s business has been booming since December of 2010, Rogers shared that opening up a bakery wasn’t something she had in mind initially.

After baking her way through her master’s program to make ends meet, a chance encounter with an old friend led her to find a perfect location to build a business for her passion. Rogers’ revelation came after she noticed how the customers responded to her delicious products, all thanks to her late grandmother who taught her how to bake throughout childhood. Rogers’ fresh baked goods come loaded with her grandma’s top “secret ingredient”  that she would include in all her recipes, but of course, she wouldn’t dare give it away. She’s grown alongside her loving customer base of diverse Brooklynites and she’s even received praise from a few big stars like Beyonce, who has popped in to taste her sweet creations.

With the holiday season approaching, you’ll find Rogers hard at work in her bakery whipping up orders for customers around the clock, making everything including cakes and pies in addition to customizing orders for people who bring in their very own recipes. If you’re thinking about jumping into the world of entrepreneurship, Rogers says start where you are now with what you have. You’ll be surprised what you can create.
