In addition to her powerful voice and acute rhymes, Lauryn Hill is a natural beauty. And she didn’t have to bare her boobs and butt for us to see it. That’s why it was so hard for us to accept her departure from the music industry. She was truly one of a kind. Since The Miseducation Lauryn has traveled down an interesting path:. multiple children, some diva behavior and most recently, her own Maury Povich moment. But such is life and it  wouldn’t be complete without its ups and downs. The same is true for a hair history. If we dig through our old photos, we’ll find some wonders and some womps. Check out Lauryn’s.

Close and Curly

I absolutely love this look. Her hair is short, but the style, texture and sheen of her hair in this shot, gives her style so much more dimension and character. The fact that Lauryn’s eyes are so engaging in this photo definitely seal the deal. It’s no wonder this is one of the more popular pictures of her.

Yikes!

If you’ve ever seen this picture; then you must have known that it would have make an appearance in this story. If you can’t tell by now, I love Lauryn and I sincerely root for her but this look right here is just awful. Sure a lot of it has to do with the clownish makeup and outfit she’s wearing but her hair isn’t doing her any favors either. The colors are wrong for her complexion and the shape is even worse. Please, never again.

Loc’d up

Lauryn’s short locs, with a flip and a side swept bang, frame her face perfectly.

Huh?

I’m just confused by this one. Clearly this is a wig but the way she has it styled is just all wrong. From what we can see under that hat there are some halfway flipped strands and a severe bang. Maybe something went wrong back stage and she had to come out like this. This has to be the only explanation because I just don’t understand anything else.

Sweetness

Isn’t this lovely? She literally glows in this picture. Lauryn’s neck length locs are braided or twisted to the back and bound into small pigtails at the bottom. It seems like a style for a child but it’s this childlike style (and the great lighting) that make this photo so adorable.

Straight Away

Now usually we like to keep things cut and dry with these hair posts; but honestly, the verdict is still out for me on this one. While there were several blogs who asked what the hell was going on, there are parts of me that like this look. Sure her ends look a little rough and the look is purposefully unpolished but I like the two tones and the wild, billowing in the wind look. Let us know what you think about this one in the comment’s section.

Afrodisiac

This is how an afro should be done my friends! It’s nice and round with definitive curls and let us not forget the sheen. This hair, whether real or fake, has been moisturized. The full fro really works for Miss Hill.

Grandma?

I’m not quite sure what is going on here but I don’t like it. I have a strong suspicion that this hair is not real because it looks like it. Lauryn’s face looks good but again when her hair is not right, it has the potential to make her look older than she really is.

Hair Inspiration

When my mother first started contemplating going natural and getting locs she had me print this picture of Lauryn off the internet, being that she was computer illiterate at the time. This had to be almost ten years ago. So you can imagine my surprise when my mother comes out of her room holding this exact same picture. Why do I tell you this story? To let you know how fabulous her hair was in this picture. It was remarkably beautiful and certainly memorable.

Another Hat?!

Again, with the hat over the bad wig. The affects of this combination are no bueno. It makes her look virtually unrecognizable.

Wiggy Wonder

I prefer Lauryn natural but I can’t deny that the wig (or wigs?) she wore, for the Essence shoot back in the day were fabulous. One minute it’s fun and flirty (top right) and the next it’s strictly business (bottom right.) Either way she worked it.
