There’s nothing like the hunger pangs that hit you late at night. And ladies of the night are not exempt. In fact, given the level of activity, they’re likely burning more calories than those of us who sit at our desks all day.
This is the reason why a chef in Portland, Oregon started a meal service that caters healthy options for strippers and sex workers.
According to Willamette Week, Nikeisah Newton started the service to feed her stripper girlfriend. She noticed that her girlfriend, a rugby player and stripper, had a car that was full of fast food bags.
It struck a cord with Newton. “Her job requires her to be in shape and not eat food like that. She was a healthy person in general, so I was just like,
‘What are you doing?’
In Portland, Oregon the options for late-night food are few so you already know that healthy, late-night options are even harder to come by. Plus, Newton’s girlfriend didn’t feel comfortable going anywhere to sit down after work. To solve the problem, Newton started cooking vegetable-rich comfort food which she hand-delivered to the strip club.
Newton said, “I guess it was just wanting to nourish her.” Eventually, the women who worked with Newton’s girlfriend started noticing. “Her coworkers would make comments, and she was kind of just like, ‘You know, they would pay you if you delivered this food.”
The suggestion from her girlfriend eventually turned into Meals 4 Six Inch Heels. The aim of the service is to bring healthy, tasty meals to sex workers.
Clients place orders through direct message on Instagram.
The service was launched in January. To serve her growing clientele, Newton spends weekdays building a menu and shopping for ingredients from local farms. Then on the weekends, she spends her evenings driving to strip clubs near Portland. Her most popular dish is the Freegan Vegan. It’s a mix of roasted plantain, brown rice with tomatillos and cilantro,. roasted apples rubbed with lime juice and curry powder.
Newton said, “I just want to bring different, eclectic flavors to Portland in general, and especially to the sex worker community,” says Newton.
“Everybody should be excited about food, and everybody should have access to healthy food.”
Most of us aren’t working these late night hours, but you can still get into the meal options Newton offers. In addition to offering a much-needed service, the food is beautiful. Check out the pictures on the following pages.
