John Singleton’s mother is working to clear up some misconceptions regarding the famed director’s tribute at the 2019 BET Awards on Sunday.
It started when the mother of Singleton’s daughter, Tosha Lewis, in a now deleted Facebook post, wrote scathing message on Sunday calling out the network over what she felt was a lackluster remembrance. Lewis, who shares a 27-year-old daughter with Singleton named Justice, has since deleted the post but used her platform to gripe about the tribute for slain rapper Nipsey Hussle versus Singleton’s.
“So BET can take the time to honor Nipsey Hussle and not John Singleton?” she wrote. “They’re whole movie lineup are John Singleton movies. His movies are in the BET commercial. They never featured anything Nipsey, but I guess he’s trending nevermind John was talking and doing the same stuff as Nipsey in the 90’s.”
However, in an interview with TMZ, Singleton’s mom Sheila Ward says the family doesn’t share the same sentiments at all and wants Singleton’s family to be exempt from any criticism regarding Lewis’ statement.
After Lewis posted her message, several fans shared links to the tribute featuring actors Morris Chestnut and Damson Idris. Chestnut broke ground as one of the lead actors in Singleton’s critically acclaimed Boyz n the Hood, while Idris who stars in Snowfall, the director’s tv series on FX, graced the stage to share their thoughts on Singleton’s legacy.
Lewis, still considerably adamant on comparing Singleton’s tribute to Hussle’s then pointed out that none of Singleton’s family was invited to the ceremony, while Hussle’s whole family was in attendance. TMZ has since learned that Singleton’s daughter Justice was invited to the awards show.
Ward’s concerns could be regarding the fact that the family has larger internal issues going on. During Singleton’s sickness and subsequent death, several reports detailed the battle between Ward and her granddaughter Cleopatra over Singleton’s estate. The family also hired a private investigator to find out whether any foul play resulted in their loved ones death.
