When it comes to cocktails, most of us know it’s the mixers, not the alcohol, that do all the damage calory wise. It’s for that reason many of us opt for a vodka soda — as in club soda — instead of juice or some other form of sugary carbonated beverage to mix with liquor when watching our waistlines. But for those who love a fruity drink, the taste of this low-cal alternative can leave a lot to be desired. Smirnoff knows the struggle. That’s why the brand just launched a line of Zero Sugar Infusions that packs a lot of flavor without packing on the pounds, and it’s here just in time for Memorial Day Weekend.

Like the name suggests, Smirnoff Zero Sugar Infusions are a completely sugar-free vodka. But, unlike the name might suggest, the lack of sugar doesn’t translate to a lack of flavor. In fact, the debut launch comes in three flavor varients: Cucumber & Lime, Watermelon & Mint, and Strawberry & Rose. And at 30% Alc/Vol (60 proof), consumers will still redeem the same strength and quality of their cocktail when choosing these products.

I had a chance to try the new line at NoMo Kitchen in New York City earlier this month and I was pleasantly surprised at the flavor of the cocktails. Vodka sodas with lemon and lime are my go-to drink so, naturally, I appreciated the refreshing taste of the Cucumber and Lime blend. It was nice to have a bit more flavor, though, with the Watermelon & Mint infusion and at the end of the night, I decided Strawberry & Rose was actually my favorite combination.

What keeps cocktails made with Zero Sugar Infusions on the healthier side is the fact that because the flavor is included in the vodka, you don’t need to add a sugary mixer. At the launch event, bartenders used bubly sparkling water, which has zero calories and zero sweeteners, to create all of the beverages. Heads up, the grapefruit flavor goes great with Strawberry & Rose; lemon bubly pairs nicely with Watermelon & Mint; and Cucumber & Lime matches great with Lime bubly. Two ounces of Smirnoff Zero Sugar Infusions with 4 ounces of soda water makes for the perfect combination. Put a slice of fruit on the rim for added flavor and decor.

The new line hit shelves across the U.S. this month, and at $11.99 per 750mL bottle you can turn up responsibly wallet and waist wise. Hit www.smirnoff.com for more info.
