Yesterday, we reported on the announcement Ciara shared. She had been accepted into Harvard. She shared the news, clad in a Harvard sweatshirt, via her Instagram page. In reality, she was accepted to the business school’s Business of Entertainment, Media and Sports program.

While most of the internet had congratulatory offerings for the singer, there was one Harvard student who wanted to offer some clarification about the news. Apparently, the program is not acceptance into the Ivy League university as a whole. Instead, it’s a 3-day course in which you can enroll, after acceptance, for $10,000.

The fact that Ciara was accepted into the program is still an accomplishment. There was an application process. But some people feel that the initial announcement the singer shared was misleading. Her completion of the program won’t result in a degree but rather a certificate. And I think people understand that enrolling in one course at a institution doesn’t compare to the process of competing with hundreds of thousands of other students to be accepted into Harvard proper. And while I think we can recognize applying and paying a tuition is standard when it comes to higher education, there are those who felt Ciara’s announcement belittled the accomplishments of those who have done the work to be accepted in an attempt to graduate with a degree…and those who did the work and were not accepted.

See what people on both sides of the fence had to say about this on the following pages.
