Tuesday, April 23 at 8/7c, marks the beginning and the end for BET’s Being Mary Jane. The show returns from a hiatus that began back in 2017 after the conclusion of Season 4, but will wrap itself up with a two-hour series finale movie. We’re going to pick up where we left off and figure out how Mary Jane Paul’s story ends. However, before we can say goodbye to MJ (Gabrielle Union), we have to take a look back at all the crazy moments from the show that sucked us in over the years, as well as the ones that left us scratching our head. Take a look back at these unforgettable moments from Being Mary Jane ahead of tonight’s finale.

Mary Jane Tells Avery She’s Having an Affair With Andre
Everything about Season 1 was amazing, but no storyline was juicier TV than Mary Jane’s affair with Andre (played by Omari Hardwick). In the beginning of it, after MJ stepped on his wedding ring in her home and took a hose to him, she ended up formally meeting his wife, Avery (Robinne Lee). A fan of her work on TV, Avery would soon become a nemesis of MJ’s after the talk show host revealed to her that she was having an affair with Andre. Sis didn’t get the reaction she was expecting though.

Andre and MJ Make Love in the Grossest Place on Earth
MJ was supposed to be keeping her distance from Andre after finding out he was married. However, he caught her at the gym they both attend, and also during a vulnerable moment. Before viewers knew it, they were back in the arms of one another in, perhaps, the dirtiest place on earth — the public gym shower.

MJ Stole David’s Sperm to the Embarrassment of Everyone She Knows
Andre wasn’t the only man Mary Jane dealt with during Season 1 of the show. She also entertained casual sex, and the possibility of rekindling a relationship, all with ex-boyfriend David (Stephen Bishop). However, Mary Jane’s goal, in most of her situationships, is to either get down the aisle or have a baby (or have both). After a night in the hay with one of those things on her mind, she decides to steal sperm from a condom David used with her and froze the contents for future use. Her decision to do so was panned by friends — and would eventually get back to David.

MJ Crashes Car After Finding Out Her Ex and Her BFF Messed Around
Mary Jane’s BFF, Dr. Lisa Hudson, was a very complicated woman who, while a friend of our protagonist, was also jealous of her. To be specific, Lisa was jealous of the relationships MJ was having (even though they weren’t successful in the long-term). It came out in Season 2 during an accidental butt dial on David’s part, that he and Lisa had messed around while he was dealing with MJ. In shock over this revelation, MJ ends up in a car crash that causes some severe facial lacerations and puts her anchor seat in jeopardy. It also puts a major dent in her relationships with Lisa and David.

Dr. Lisa Commits Suicide
While it was easy to understand why MJ would want to distance herself from Lisa after finding out about her involvement with David, she was also aware that Lisa was a very lonely individual who had struggled with her mental health. In Season 3, the guilt and shame of everything became too much for Lisa, and we actually watch her take her own life with the help of a cocktail of pills and alcohol. Her death, and the reveal of the painful things Lisa endured in her past (including at the hands of her stepfather, played by Richard Lawson), make saying goodbye to Lisa’s character especially rough.

MJ Goes Toe-to-Toe With CeCe
In one of her best performances, Loretta Devine joined the show in Season 3 as CeCe, the other driver impacted by MJ’s car crash. She’s uninsured and left out to dry as everyone clamors to MJ’s side following the collision. In desperate times, CeCe finds MJ after they’re released from the hospital and blackmails her. CeCe finds out that MJ had some alcohol in her system when she crashed into her and that such information wouldn’t look well for the popular talk show host. She tells MJ to pay her $25,000 or she’s going to leak the info. MJ does eventually give CeCe money, which she uses to jumpstart a business, and they end up developing an interesting understanding, or dare we call it, a friendship. However, by the end of Season 3, MJ pulls the plug on all of that and has CeCe arrested for blackmailing her.

MJ Dates a White Man Who (Surprise) Isn’t Woke
It was a temporary dating move in Season 3, Mary Jane’s decision to date a white man named GG after cutting ties with David and having a friends-with-benefits situation with a guy named Brandon (Thomas Q. Jones). They have their differences, including his desire for her to go out with him in public (and not just mess with him within the four fabulous walls of her home), but she enjoys his company while dealing with a really rough time in her life (the death of Lisa and David having a baby with his new lady). Their interracial relationship, or whatever it was, becomes the talk of the town eventually, and she doesn’t like the attention or the judgment that comes with it. She eventually realizes that he isn’t the one for her, especially since he doesn’t seem interested in understanding where she comes from about the struggle of Black folks. She tells him she prefers Black men, and “I want Black love.”

Niecy’s Troubles Begin After She’s Tasered by Police
Season 3 was also the beginning of the end for creator and showrunner Mara Brock Akil, who exited the series after the finale. That’s probably why the season was so good (and the last really good one if we’re being honest). If Lisa dying and the CeCe blackmail drama weren’t enough, we also can’t forget that MJ’s niece, Niecy, had a pretty bad encounter with police during the season finale, written by Akiil. While riding with her son, she was stopped by police, and after going back and forth with the officer and being told to get out of her car, Niecy was tasered by the officer. She would later be awarded a settlement for the incident (though she would blow that entire situation), but in the moment, it was a great way to address real-life police brutality conversations and stories that were occurring at the time.
Helen Patterson, Surprisingly, Decides to Throw Away Her Marriage for an Old Flame
In Season 4, while Mary Jane makes the unexpected leap from Atlanta to NYC, we find out that back home, things are a hot a– mess. Her mother, Helen (played by Margaret Avery), who no longer seems to have any issues with lupus, is having a full-blown affair with an ex-boyfriend named Frank (Fred Williamson). This man, interesting enough, was someone she was with before settling down with Paul (Richard Roundtree), and he ends up being the actual father of Patrick Patterson, MJ’s eldest brother. All of this information and drama causes Paul to decide to divorce Helen, which is not a shock, but was still a surprise, as it breaks up the family we’ve come to love.
Cardi B Comes Around to Be…Cardi B
In Season 4, Mary Jane ended up going viral after having to interview reality star Mercedes Wilkerson (Cardi B) on Great Day USA about her swimsuit line. While MJ takes on the interview to tap into the show’s younger audience, she finds herself at odds with Wilkerson on-camera and off.

Mary Jane Tries to Force Lee on Us
When Mary Jane moved to NYC, there was a lot to get adjusted to for fans of the show: the new setting, the decrease in the amount of screen time for her family, etc. One of the biggest characters we had to get used to out of the blue was Lee, MJ’s new comedian boo from the U.K. He was nice, but not anything like the guys she had dealt with in the past. It was almost like Lee was forced on us, because MJ was really trying to make him into her Mr. Right. She literally asked the man in their first sexual encounter to tell her that he loved her, and they barely knew each other. He did it to make her happy, but it would be one of many things that wouldn’t be enough for her. She would eventually get wooed away by Justin, despite her attempts to go forward with trying to start a family with Lee. He just wan’t who she wanted.

Justin Proposes to a Possibly Pregnant MJ
So is Justin who Mary Jane wants? That’s what it seemed like for most of Season 4. After resisting his charms for some time, they end up getting close and sleep together, and she jumps headfirst into wanting a relationship with him. There are bumps along the ride, with her wanting to know about his romantic life before her and dealing with the professional drama as well since he was vying for the executive producer position at Great Day USA, which she had a say in. When she chooses Kara for the EP position over him, she’s sure he’s done with her, and she seemingly goes forward with having embryos she’d frozen as a backup plan, implanted. When she returns home, Justin is there to let her know he still wants to be with her and pops the question. Is she finally going to get her happily ever or will it be another sabotage situation? We’re finally going to find out!
