Royal Oils

For six years, I wore locs, and the products used for that style as my hair matured and grew were pretty simple. My regimen consisted of hot oil treatments: tea tree, peppermint, olive, lavender, avocado, eucalyptus, and so on and so forth.

But last year, after growing weary of the look and the maintenance required with my busy schedule, I decided to do the big chop. In September, I cut off my hair, dyed it light brown and started over:

I was excited about it — until I realized I was back at square one in terms of trying to figure out what products worked for me. I bought a few things, used a few oils that I kept from my loc’ing years, and I took products that were sent for us to try at the office. That’s how I stumbled upon Head & Shoulders’ new Royal Oils collection.

The line has been created by “black hair experts” for textured hair to help relieve itch and provide hydration from the scalp to the tips. Knowing dandruff was and has always been an issue for me, I took home the Moisture Boost Shampoo, Renewal Conditioner, Deep Moisture Masque and Daily Moisture Scalp Cream. To test it all out, I used everything at once. I was excited, because washing my hair and really getting to my scalp to cleanse it had been an issue before, so I was looking forward to having easy access to my head.

I washed my hair with the shampoo, which is paraben-free, and it definitely removed the build-up that still occurred, despite me having a lot less hair. I followed it up with conditioner, which has ZPT plus behentrimonium chloride, known for targeting damage done to the hair shaft and providing moisture. I capped my in-shower treatment with the masque, which offered me intense moisture after I sat with it with a shower cap on for, at the least, 10 minutes.

When I came out of the shower, I was pleased to find that my 4C hair (those curls are all sponge-made, don’t be fooled) felt soft. I was able to put a wide-tooth comb through it, and overall, my head of hair felt refreshed. I finished the entire experience by using the scalp cream, which with its thin nozzle, can be easily applied to keep flakes from appearing and to give your scalp relief.

So what do I think? I think the Royal Oils line is a great collection to help provide your hair with moisture. As someone who likes to work out often and therefore, needs to wash my hair more than I used to, it’s the perfect lightweight but nourishing treatment line — especially during the winter. Not to mention, it’s also a great addition to your bathroom product bin based on the price. While the cost can vary based on the retailer, everything starts at $6.99 and is affordable at under $10.

The Royal Oils line first hit the market in limited release last summer, but it officially became available in January. If you’re looking for a new product to try, and you’re also hoping to curb dry scalp issues, I think Head & Shoulders’ new treatment collection is a must. It feels good, smells good and it will do your hair and scalp very good.
