Married at First Sight Season 8 couples

Can we be done with the idea of “traditional” marriages in 2019?

While they work for some, in this day and age, men and women are doing the same things, working the same long hours, so the expectation that one person would be expected to take on more is outdated. It’s especially a no-no when the woman in the relationship makes more than the man, or in the case of Kristine and Keith of this new season of Married at First Sightthree times more.

During last night’s episode, the couple met with Pastor Cal to talk about expectations for their marriage. While both parties work, she is a residential real estate agent, and he is a patient care technician who is in school, so Kristine is the breadwinner in their new relationship (though she wanted a man who made more than her). However, Keith was raised by his grandmother, who did just about everything for him. She happily cooked and cleaned for him, to the point where he doesn’t know how to put together a meal for anybody else. With that being said, he made it clear that he doesn’t want to cook, that Kristine would be the homemaker, and that she would be coming in to take care of the big bills.

Kristine seemed okay with it when speaking to Pastor Cal, but as someone who went into my own marriage trying to cook three times a week despite getting home tired and later than my husband from work (our partnership is 50/50 in terms of bills, though), I can say she will eventually hate it. Resentment about having all those responsibilities eventually seeps out, including in arguments, and that’s not something she wants to end up throwing back in his face later.

Overall though, if she’s going to be taking care of them financially, he needs to be willing to bring more to the table. She likely won’t feel any bitterness about it if Keith offers to help out, at least with taking care of the house. But based on what his bedroom at granny’s house looked like, stacked with shoe boxes, clothes and random papers, him taking the lead in that area probably wouldn’t end well…

I’m not the only person who felt some type of way about the expectations of this new marriage, though. Check out Twitter’s colorful thoughts below and by hitting the flip.
