The entertainment world was rocked with the untimely passing of model and actress Kim Porter yesterday morning. The mother and entrepreneur was honored in the aftermath of her death by both fans, friends and family, with hundreds of people taking to social media to mourn her passing. As the mother of three of Diddy’s children, Kim was often spotted around the world with the rap mogul on red carpets or A-list events throughout the years.
“The first time I saw her, she was at the studio with her ex-boyfriend,” Combs said in a 2006 Essence magazine interview. “I wasn’t trying to holler at her or anything, but I was admiring her—her lips, her eyes, her mouth, her shape, her energy—and thinking, ‘I wish I had a girl like that.’”
Kim and Diddy first started dating in 1994, with their first son together, Christian Combs, being born just four years later.
But their happy family was abruptly disrupted in 1999 and Diddy began publicly dating Jennifer Lopez in 1999. Kim & Diddy split for a time, but rekindled again in 2006 and welcomed twins into the family. In the midst of having two baby girls, Porter discovered Diddy had fathered a child with another woman, and made the move to separate from Diddy for good.
“After ten years, I have decided to end my on-again/off-again relationship with Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs,” she said in a statement at the time. “In ending this relationship, I made a decision that was in the best interest of myself, Sean and our family. I look forward to moving on with my life and my career, and wish him prosperity, health and happiness in life and in love. We will remain friends and committed parents to our children.”
According to close family and friends, the duo remained close friends through it all, prioritizing raising their kids Quincy (fathered by R&B super star, Al B. Sure), Christian, Chance, D’Lila and Jessie together as a blended family unit.
“You know how when two people go their separate ways, most of the time there’s animosity? It’s not like that with us,” she told Essence in 2009. “Sean and I have this bond, this friendship. It’s not about ‘if you’re faithful to me, if I’m being faithful to you.’ We’re friends. I’m the person he can tell his inner most thoughts to and he’s that person for me. He still calls me everyday and we talk.”
