First off: I am not a Nicki Minaj hater. I’m not a Cardi B. fan that is here penning this. I enjoy the music (and antics) of each woman and think there is room for both of them to win. As a fellow Trinidadian, I really want to see both of my island bredrin’ shine. Cardi B.’s glam team has undoubtedly helped her rise and amass to be one of the most buzzed about celebrities. Minaj is the complete opposite: I think a huge part of her recent demise has been the steady undoing of her fierceness by none other than her glam squad.
Nicki Minaj showed up for the 2018 MTV EMA’s in Bilbao, Spain and won Best Look and Best Hip Hop awards…looking like this. She wore a silver Versace gown and a blonde lace front wig that was teased and pulled into a ponytail. She accented the look with Versace jewels including a chain bracelet and a Versace belt (I’m not sure if it’s part of the dress or was added later).
The silver dress had a bodysuit and placed a ballgown like skirt around it with see through features.
Her makeup featured a strong, dramatic, thick cat eye with a nude lip.
At one point she also donned a silver and gold mask that looked, well…hideous. I would want to hide myself in this look too.
When you hear it without looking at it. It all sounds great, right? Versace dress, a gold and silver mask, a strong dramatic cat eye to make them look twice…
She even had a custom Versace look for the performance! Versace makes custom clothes for power stars like her and Beyoncé. It’s a legacy high fashion brand that anyone would want to work with. They were one of the main fashion sponsors of the 2018 Met Gala. Hell, other than Gucci, it’s one of the most mentioned labels in rap songs.
Nevertheless, with the biggest brands behind her, winning prestigious “Best Look” awards…Minaj is still failing hard. Behind every strong woman, is a strong team…and it’s time for Minaj to switch hers up (again). Her career depends on this.
I know the self proclaimed Barbie likes to give us looks that wow and switch up her hair faster than her G5 flies from NY to London; however, her latest looks have >>insert clap>insert clap>insert clap>insert clap
Yes, in August the Rich Sex singer did a 360 on her Glam Squad. She replaced her longtime hairstylist Kim Kimble with up and coming wig slayer Tae. The only person on the current team she needs to keep is him.
There are rumors that Aaliyah Jay replaced her longtime makeup artist Sheiks, though we’ve only seen her take credit on the ‘gram for one look. Allegedly, though the fashion grapevine, Nicki Minaj is between stylists. Reportedly, her former stylist, Maher Jridi, sued her for a $73K clothing bill. They had been working with each other for a little over a year. Damn. It looks like it’s time for another 360 because this team isn’t working. And like a relationship that one keeps dragging out though it’s been over for months…it’s time to let.this.team.go.
Minaj is at a crossroads. She can evolve and develop into a new iteration of herself or stay trying to chase the fashion and style of these young millennials (who ironically, are copying and looking up to her). Babe, you are claiming the Queen status, stand on your throne, in confidence, and pay for the support (you have the money) to have a team that will help shoot you back into style star status.
