Mia and Tristan

When the news came out that Mia Bally filed for divorce from Tristan Thompson, no one was necessarily shocked that the marriage didn’t work out. However, it was surprising to find out that she was the one who decided to throw in the towel, considering he forgave her for lying about the stalking allegations that caused her to be arrested on the way to their honeymoon. He gained some sympathy in the situation.

But after watching last night’s episode of Married at First Sight, one can see a major reason she might have felt like she needed to end things.

During the episode, Tristan and Mia had a disagreement because he, without consulting her first, canceled his health insurance so that he could be added to hers. This was done in anticipation of their move from Dallas to Houston, which was to be done to accommodate his business. When she told him that she didn’t appreciate him doing that because she wanted to have a discussion so they could compare potential costs, etc., he brushed off her concerns and said it was a sensible decision.

It seemed like he basically made a major decision to force her to act. They talked about the insurance situation in the past, and while she said she would call her insurer, she hadn’t followed up on it. By cutting his insurance off and giving her the guilt trip that if something were to happen to him soon and she didn’t put him on her plan ASAP, he would be in trouble, he was trying to get her to step it up. She didn’t get his rationale, but he claimed it was “a common sense thing,” which is something he’s said to her in the past  — this idea that she doesn’t use good sense.

She basically said she felt like she didn’t have a voice, but he cared not.

Now, his actions weren’t the best move for a partnership, but initially, I didn’t think it was that big of a deal. You are building a future together, so how deep is it to put the man on your insurance? What was a big deal though, was his decision to kick her out of the house when he didn’t get his way. He did so because she shared understandable reservations about moving away for someone who doesn’t see the importance of having a conversation before making big decisions. And granted, she probably never wanted to move in the first place, but that doesn’t negate the validity of her feelings.

Still, in response, he literally went in her closet, pulled out her luggage, grabbed everything from artwork off the walls to candles in the crib and put them outside of the front door before shutting it on her and the cameraman. It was absolutely ridiculous.

When he was confronted about it later by Pastor Cal, he lied and said that he didn’t put her out (“She packed her bags and she left”), and that he was “tired.” It wasn’t until she plainly said that he made her feel like she didn’t matter in front of Pastor Cal that Tristan, as always, started crying and began to act apologetic. She came back home to their poorly put-together bed and, again, they agreed to move forward.

I haven’t been a big fan of the way Mia has handled things in her marriage to Tristan, but even I felt like she needed to get the hell out of dodge and stop dealing with him. If I cheat on you, if I lie on you, if I hurt you in a way that is just evil, then you might be able to explain to the world why you put me out. But if I disagree with you and tell you how you’re making me feel and you decide to have a temper tantrum and roll everything I own out the door, you’re officially showing your a–. I think Tristan still holds resentment towards her for her early lies, and likely felt that because he forgave her, she should be down to do whatever for him. But nobody told him to stay with her if he didn’t plan to let go and focus on their future. He can’t just walk over her.

Speaking of forgiveness, Mia may have been able to forgive Tristan in the moment, but it would have been hard for her to trust that next time he’s angry, he wouldn’t send her packing — especially since she doesn’t stand up for herself in an assertive manner. If weeks into a marriage you’re already walking on eggshells and scared that anything could get you put out like the family dog, how does a couple move forward in a healthy manner?

Considering that in the preview for the next episode, she tells him she wants a divorce, and we know she actually went through with filing, it’s clear that they couldn’t…
