While a slew of your favorite stars have tried pink hair and received rave reviews, for actress Skai Jackson, who is just 16, she received quite the shock when people online told her that her look wasn’t age appropriate or flattering for her darker skin tone.

While checking out events for New York Fashion Week, the star of Disney’s Bunk’d, who enjoys having fun with her hair, decided to try a pink ‘do. But she found that some people had nothing nice to say about the look. One individual even told her that the pink hair made her look darker, as though that’s a problem. And while she initially hit them with a clap back…

She decided to share a more mature response.

In a post for Teen Vogue, Jackson admitted she was taken aback by such statements.

“I was really surprised to see the comments on social media that were being said about my decision to try out a new hair color and style,” she said. “Some people thought that pink hair was not age appropriate for me or that it didn’t match my skin color, which I found very confusing.”

She attributed the negativity to the fact that people tend to see her as the young characters she plays on TV, so when she steps out in bold fashions, it isn’t always warmly received. But she’s not doing it for other people. She’s trying these things out for herself.

“I know it’s hard to believe that I’m no longer the young ‘Zuri’ everyone has grown to love, which I truly appreciate, but like every young lady, I’m growing, I’m maturing and finding myself at 16 years old discovering the joys and pains of the world we live in,” she said. “I would only ask that before you throw shade, you stop and think about all the people who have ever said something negative about you or someone you love, and how that made you or them feel. Fashion is about trying out new things and having fun, and me and my stylist, Zadrian Smith, are going to keep doing just that. Pink hair for everyone!”

But if you thought pink hair was the most out there hairstyle Jackson has tried, you’re wrong. Despite only being a teen, she’s played around with some very chic and unique looks. Hit the flip to see a few of them.
