We’ll never knock the merits of natural beauty but sometimes a girl just wants to play dress up! Unfortunately for Black girls that’s not as easy as it should be. Finding the perfect foundation to properly highlight our fierce can be extremely difficult, especially when it comes to those of us who have more melanin than most. Despite advances in technology and a socio-economic climate that have led it to become more profitable than it has ever been some organizations in the beauty industry still act like providing an array of shades is an impossible task. Luckily others have seized the opportunity to provide quality formulas for all.  We spoke to 10 beautiful Black women to find out their favorite foundations.

2. Avielle Amor @avielleamor

My current favorite foundation right now has to be HUDA beauty, the faux filter, the reason being that you can use a little bit of it and it goes a long way. I also like Milk Makeup the matte foundation formula that just came out and also I like using Estee Lauder with the cushion because the formula is amazing. The finish, I love the satin finish! I can not get that with anything else!

“As someone who often has a hard time matching foundation with my undertones and skin complexion, I love that Fenty Beauty ($34) and Nars ($49) foundations don’t leave me looking ashy or washed out. As a busy woman managing a full-time job and running my podcast Dreams In Drive – I also need something that has great natural coverage and is also long-wearing.”

“I don’t wear foundation often but when I do I rely on makeup guru Noor to apply the most natural application which she customizes by mixing 3 shades of Black OpalTRUE COLOR Skin Perfecting Stick Foundation ($9.99).”

 5. Jayyiah Coles @missjayyiah

SMASHBOX Studio Skin 15 Hour Hydrating Foundation ($36)…I absolutely love this foundation! When I first tried it on I was shocked at how it seeped into my skin and matched so perfectly! As a dark skinned woman, I’ve had pretty close matches, but none as exact as this! This foundation gives my face the perfect face lift! I remember my mom tried it for the first time and she almost screamed! She too was taken aback at how amazing this product was. Do you know how great it feels after 3 years of experiencing and taking samples at the mall to finally find the one? To quote Beyoncé ‘it’s very seldom that you’re blessed to find your equal.’”

Lancôme teinte Idole ($47) used to be my go to because it’s long lasting and they have so many undertones instead of just the usual orange tinge that comes with brown foundations. I get a nice neutral glow that balances out the redness in my sensitive skin. Fenty($34) is my new favorite! It dries down to a light matte finish and I can even use it as a spot concealer on days when I don’t want full coverage. It looks a little orange when you first put it on but once it dries and oxidizes, the color is perfect and lasts all day.”

Diorskin Forever Perfect ($52) is my FAVORITE go-to foundation. It gives me the right amount of moisture and coverage and it has SPF so my skin is protected! As a chocolate girl it’s not always easy to find a foundation that gets it right, I love Diorskin!”

My current favorite foundation is currently NARS All Day Luminous Weightless Foundation ($49). I wear Macao which is a medium-dark shade with yellow undertones. I absolutely love this foundation because of its super lightweight formula. I’ve experienced with other foundations they tend to make most of their darker shades with very orange or red undertones. NARS formula is my favorite because they have a medium-dark shade with just the right amount of yellow undertones which is perfect with my skintone. It is a pricier foundation but a little goes a long way. 1 to 2 pumps will give you a natural looking coverage which NARS describes as a luminous matte finish. I also like that if I want to go for a glam look, the foundation is buildable for a more full coverage application but still manages to feel lightweight. What really sealed NARS all day luminous as my favorite foundation was when I wore it while traveling in Southeast Asia during very hot days. This foundation didn’t transfer or budge. It managed to last for over 12 hours through humidity!”

I’ve tried dozens of foundations over the years but my go-to foundation has become Tarte Amazonian Clay in “Rich Honey” ($39) It is a perfect match for my deep complexion and red undertone. Plus, it feels light on my skin, applies smooth and has SPF 15 built into its formula. I love my melanin and want to keep it protected!
