Singer and dancer FKA Twigs recently revealed that one of the major reasons behind her absence from the music scene was her health. The 30-year-old said that she had been struggling with the pain of having multiple large fibroids — six to be exact. So in December, she underwent laparoscopic surgery to have the fibroids removed, and admitted that the road to recovery wasn’t easy. As she put it, “I started to doubt if my body would ever feel the same again.”

“I am a very private person as u all know and I have gone back and forth in my mind whether to share that this year I have been recovering from laparoscopic surgery to remove 6 fibroid tumours from my uterus,” she wrote on Instagram. “the tumours were pretty huge, the size of 2 cooking apples 🍎 🍎, 3 kiwis 🥝 🥝 🥝 and a couple of 🍓🍓. a fruit bowl of pain everyday. the nurse said that the weight and size was like being 6 months pregnant.”

“I tried to be brave but it was excruciating at times and to be honest I started to doubt if my body would ever feel the same again,” she continued. “I had surgery in December and I was so scared, despite lots of love from friends and family I felt really alone and my confidence as a woman was knocked.

but… today whilst dancing with Kelly at the choreography house I felt like my strong self again for the first time in a while and it was magical. thank you precious body for healing, thank you for reminding me to be kind to myself, you are a wonderful thing, now go create and be other once again

“I know that a lot of women suffer from fibroid tumours and I just wanted to say after my experience that you are amazing warriors and that you are not alone,” she added. “you can get through this.”

Almost two months since sharing this news and inspiring message, FKA released a video, almost a short documentary of sorts, of her road to recovery. After worrying about whether or not she would feel like herself again in her body, FKA is shown going from lying in the hospital and dealing with the scars from her surgery to getting back to work doing ballet, sword training, pole dancing and more. All this is shown to the sounds of the star singing and speaking about bouncing back from adversity:

She takes back her power and is as fit and fierce as ever.

FKA proves that sometimes it takes going through a period of weakness and remembering you don’t always have control of your body to fully value and feel better in it than ever before. And considering that between 80 and 90 percent of Black women have fibroids by the time they’re 50, and are more likely to get them earlier in life, as well as more than one, it’s important that she shared her story — and her recovery.
