In 1993, years before she would drop the game-changing Miseducation album, Lauryn Hill was Rita Louise Watson in Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit. She was singing down but her mother, Florence Watson, discouraged her from singing because she was certain that music didn’t put food on the table.
Sheryl Lee Ralph played the hell out of that role because I couldn’t stand her character.
But things worked out for Florence and Rita in the end. The same can be said for the women who played them Ralph and Hill.
The two women had a chance to reunite after one of Hill’s performances at Kaya Fest. The women gushed over each other, embraced and Ralph marveled at Hill’s daughter Selah. Ralph said, “She’s older than you were when I first met you.”
