(Crain’s) — Fighting to keep his controversial Senate-passed “swipe fee” amendment in the financial regulatory overhaul bill, Sen. Richard Durbin on Monday issued a compromise measure he says will win support from key House members.
The Illinois Democrat scored a coup for retailers last month when his last-minute amendment regulating so-called “interchange fees” — which retailers pay every time someone swipes a debit card to make a purchase in their stores — passed the Senate 64-33.
