Grab A Map

This might seem like the simplest, most obvious piece of advice that we could have mustered, but trust us it’s a lot more effective than you’d think. If you are truly open to seeing the world and not just hitting the latest celebrity vacation hotspot, then why not break out a map, close your eyes and point. Granted, there’s a chance you might point toward an ocean or a destination you’ve been to before, but give it a good three tries and explore what those locales have to offer. They may not have seem like the right fit initially, but sometimes all you need is a little research to change your mind.

Ask Friends and Co-Workers

Vacation advice springs eternal from the well of friends and co-workers. Not to say that you should take their trip assessments as gospel, but talking to people you trust or work with can be a great way to light a fire under you to discover new and exciting places across the globe. Ask them about some of their favorite destinations and the activities they did while they were there. Use this advice as a guiding compass to create your own magical journey. And once you’ve settled on a destination, don’t be shy about asking that friend or co-worker for their itinerary so you’ve got some first-hand advice on what to see, do and eat while you’re there.

Visit Your Homeland

Whether you’re of African, Caribbean, European, Asian, or any other descent, perhaps taking a walk through your ancestral history could be just the inspiration you need to set out on your next travel adventure. Especially if you’ve never visited your family’s native homeland, why not make 2018 the year you do just that. Not entirely sure where your roots lead back to? Why not take a DNA test to get some insight into where your origins are from? Perhaps it’ll open up some new travel possibilities you never even knew existed.

Reconnect With Old Friends

We definitely have a love-hate sort of relationship when it comes to social media. But there’s no doubt that Facebook and Instagram shine when it comes to tracking down old friends. Whether it was your home girl from college who you haven’t spoken to in a while or an old co-worker who is making moves abroad, social media allows us to keep an eye on the fabulous journeys of people we know. So why not use this to your trip advantage by connecting with an old friend in the new, awesome place they call home? We’re not saying you need to stay with them and do the sleepover thing, but why not use that acquaintances as a bit of travel inspiration. Plus, it’ll be nice to know a familiar face is just around the corner as you set out on exploring the city and all it has to offer.

Google Flight, Kayak, or Skyscanner It

There are plenty of sites out there that specialize in finding the best travel deals. Some of our favorites, hands down, would have to be Google Flights, Kayak and Skyscanner. Not only will they help you find the best deals on flights and hotels, but they’re also incredibly good on the inspiration front. You can often search your departing city and select “everywhere or anywhere” as your destination to source some vacation spots that are affordable and that may not have been on your radar previously.

Back to social media we go for some vacation guidance. While spying on friends and co-workers can help to provide some inspiration, why not go to the experts for additional thought-starters. From fashionistas to travel gurus, Instagram is chock full of gorgeous people in even more gorgeous places. If they look so fabulous on Insta in these exotic places, then there is no way you won’t look equally as good. So get ready to make your own killer grams on beaches and beautiful lands across the globe.

Pick Up A Magazine

This might sound a little old-fashioned, but if you’re really struggling to make some travel decisions, then why not pick up a magazine and start flipping through. Sometimes all you need is a stunning photo essay and some interesting insights from travel experts to tip your vacation scales to one destination over another.

Follow Your Passion

This is one bit of advice we love. Whether you’re an avid runner, love to surf or think Sundays were made for cycling, following your greatest passions can be a phenomenal way to pick your next vacation. Think of how you love to spend your time and key-in on destinations that will allow you to experience your passion points in new and exciting ways. Take it from us, doing the activities you love most amid a unique and unfamiliar backdrop can prove to be incredibly memorable and fulfilling on a deep level.

Follow Your Stomach

Sure following your hobbies is great, but sometimes following your stomach is even better. There are foodie towns all over the world just waiting for you to indulge, so pick your poison strategically. If there is a type of food or a specific delicacy that rocks your world, why not go to where it was first created. You can’t get better than the original, so allow your favorite foods to steer your vacation ship.

Make Your Dreams Come True

As lofty as this might sound, this is one bit of advice that we really subscribe to. When you are really trying to figure out where you want to spend your hard-earned dollars, dig deep inside. Is there a place that you’ve always wanted to go but it seemed crazy, impractical or out of reach? Toss those concerns to the side and seize the day. 2018 is your year to see the world and don’t let anything or anyone stop you from doing so.
