I have to admit, I’m a little late to the ATL train. In fact, I just watched the movie last week. And I dug it. I can see why it has the mini cult following that it does. It’s a cute, little movie– which surprisingly took only 45 days to shoot in the summer of 2005. So here we are, getting ready to dive into the little known facts behind the film, produced, in conjunction with T-Boz and Dallas Austin, by Will Smith’s company Overbrook. Let’s dive in.
While some of you might be rolling your eyes at the thought of it, in the case of my co-worker who loves her some T.I., a few of you might be somewhere excited at the idea that we could be seeing a second installment of ATL soon enough.
In an interview with Rap-Up, director Chris Robinson, who was behind the original classic film (I kid, I kid), spoke not too long ago on the possibility of a sequel. He said that for all he knew at that time, work on a new film was a rumor, but he did speak on what it would take to get one made:
“We all joked about doing an ATL 2, and how down T.I.’s character would be running the comic section of the newspaper and what the twins would be doing. But you never know. If the fans wanted it enough, there would definitely be a sequel.”
Well, according to VIBE, it just might be happening. On his Instagram page, Robinson posted the following picture:
As you can see, the caption says that an ATL II is in the works, and could either start filming or be released by next spring. Robinson went on to delete the photo, but has since posted pictures of Jackie Long (who played Esquire in the film) and Albert Daniels (who played Brooklyn) out together, with the caption “
#ESQUIRE #BROOKLYN #ATL II MEETING #START THE RUMORS!” All I can say is that, one, he needs to chill out on all the caps lock, and two, things are about to get pretty interesting.
While the original ATL is…cute, it was released in 2006. It seems a bit late to try and do sequel, especially since T.I. definitely doesn’t look like he did in the first film, in Lauren London is focused on her new gig on The Game. But I wouldn’t mind knowing what became of Rashad and New New…
But what about you? Do you think a sequel to ATL is a good idea after all of these years?
By now we’ve learned that a movie doesn’t have to be Oscar-worthy for you to enjoy it. Every once in a while, there’s nothing wrong with being able to predict a story line and laughing anyway. These are the films that aren’t exactly good but we love them anyway.
Gotta Man That I Think I’m Gon’ Love Forever: Keri Hilson And Her Baller Boo Serge Ibaka Get Cute And Cuddly At ATL Club
While we were bumming it up for the weekend catching up on movies, a few reality TV stars and a few of Atlanta’s finest entertainers put on their tallest stilettos and headed to Privé nightclub this past weekend. Among those cheesing it up for the camera included Keri Hilson and her Oklahoma City Thunder playing boyfriend Serge Ibaka (who is super fine). The two were snapped getting extra cute, close and cozy in the club. They danced, they had some drinks, and she showed off her svelte frame in a pair of super-tight white jeans and a printed crop top. Maybe it’s the alcohol in her system at that time, but doesn’t Keri just look the happiest she has in a while? A good man can do that to you! They are very cute and seem to be head over heels in love, am I right?
Check out more pictures of the two cuddled up lovers in the club, along with snaps of a bra-less Joseline Hernandez (why, girl, why??) and her man Stevie J, Cassie, Toya Wright and Tiny, and Mimi Faust of all people painting the town red in the ATL on the next page:
Even a Hollywood starlet like Lauren London battles with the challenges of being a single, working mother.
The new star of BET’s The Game says juggling her work life and raising her 4-year-old son Cameron Carter (dad is rapper Lil’ Wayne) has its challenges. “It’s not easy but I’m not the first to do it,” she told ESSENCE at their sixth annual Black Women in Hollywood luncheon. “I know I can do it; there’s a lot of mothers that work. I got the blueprint from my mother who was a working mom, so I just get it done.”
Aside from her family, London says she finds inspiration from women in the industry like The Game’s creator Mara Brock Akil, a mom of two. “Just working with Mara continues to inspire me to meet the goals that I continue to make for myself,” she said.
Yes, women are definitely finding a way to keep their family’s heads above water. For more with Lauren, including what she thinks about her new character on The Game, head over to Essence.
Are you a single, working mom? Do you have family support or are you doing it alone? How do you make it work?

This season Real Housewives of Atlanta stars Cynthia Bailey and Kenya Moore have let it be repeatedly known they’re not interested in being BFF’s. Early in the season Bailey and Moore get into a war of words during a casting call at Bailey’s modeling agency. “I felt like she came in and disrespected me,” says Bailey. “I was really trying to bring her in and welcome her to the group and she just did too much.”
Check out how the two former models really feel about each other away from the Housewives camera. It just might surprise you. ESSENCE has the video.
Years ago, movies for, by and about black people were coming out at a rapid rate. Some of them we all know and love because they were so amazing. But then there are some movies – both good and bad – that are considered “underground hits,” or cult classics, that many of us eventually saw at home and may (or may not) want to admit you’ve seen! The Real Housewives of Atlanta castmember and self-described “Queen of TV”, NeNe Leakes, is launching her own fashion line. I know, we’re sort of shocked too.
According to The Hollywood Reporter
On Tuesday, the 44-year-old mother of two announced that she has signed with global brand licensing agency Beanstalk to make her move into fashion. Beanstalk says in an announcement tied to Licensing Expo 2012, now going on in Las Vegas, that it intends to “leverage NeNe’s position in pop culture to offer consumers fashion-forward, affordable apparel and accessories, designed to empower women to walk into a room and ‘own it’ — like NeNe herself.”
No deals are signed yet, but Beanstalk will look to license a range of consumer products built around fashions that will appeal to the women who have watched her evolve on the show.
“While the fame of reality television characters is often short-lived and fleeting,” said Michael Stone, Beanstalk’s president and CEO, “NeNeLeakes has displayed versatility that has enabled her to transition from being a Real Housewives personality to a featured television star on Glee. NeNe’s multi-faceted personality and aspirational style will translate well into products that will emotionally connect with her fans.”
Said Allison Ames, president of North America at Beanstalk: “NeNe’s rise to fame has eclipsed that of any other reality television star today, providing a real opportunity to extend her brand.”
NeNe Leakes is easily the most popular of the Housewives in Atlanta (and the highest paid!). She may even be the most popular including all of the Housewives shows. However, to say “her fame has eclipsed that of any other reality television star today” is quite a leap considering the Kardashians. Coincidentally, they have a clothing line too and it is terrible.
NeNe isn’t the first Housewife to create a fashion line but we’re hoping she has better luck than castmate Sheree whose “She by Sheree” clothing line was a total failure a couple of years ago. Remember the “fashion show with no fashion?” Sheree blamed Atlanta for the flop, but maybe NeNe can prove her wrong.
We’ll definitely be watching, but will you be wearing?
