Face it. You probably know more about Kelis’s hairstyles over the years than you do her music. While both have been provocative and attention-grabbing, her hair takes the cake for what stands out about her most. One thing you can say about this chick is that she keeps it bright and won’t wear one style for too long, and maybe that’s why her styles are so known–she doesn’t want to look like anyone else. For further proof of that, check through our gallery of her hair ups and downs since her start and tell us whether you think it’s a do or a don’t for her ‘dos.

Back when Kelis first stepped out on the scene, she was wearing big, bountiful curly hair that was said to be her own (I’m not mad at her either way). Not only do I love it because it’s fun and carefree, but the two-tone color job on her hair is pretty fresh! A honey shade of brown on top and chocolate on the bottom of tight, long spirals is a win in my book. Do you love it?

On the other side of the curly spectrum, not sure how I feel about this look. While I understand this is a cropped and curly cut, the one tall side and the shiny factor remind me of a Jheri curl. Then I’m can’t if she’s trying to wear a part that’s not showing up, but there’s a lot of mystery to this style, and I’m not sure if that’s a good thing. What is it!?

Where would the hair game be without Kelis revolutionizing the tapered-on-one-side/long-bangs-on-the-other look? When she stepped out with this new-ish style in the “Bossy” video, all kinds of women ran to the salon and got their hair chopped off. While Rihanna would later do her own take on the look and get a bit more credit for it, Kelis killed it. Soooo fresh.

What the?

After she did the cute tapered and long look, Kelis decided to change it up BIG time with not only shockingly pink hair (a la cotton candy), but also by shaving one side of her head! I totally get the concept of looking different, but this is just cray-cray for my tastes. And the fact that she left the hair above her ear that looks like a fuzzy little piece someone forgot to clip is just too much for me. C’mon boo!

Er, ignore the shades that are very distracting, and keep your eyes on the hair. As I was saying before, color is a huge part of Kelis’s looks. She likes her ish bright and funky, and I feel her on that. But this toned down but still sharp bronze-y red is fierce. Throw it on this curly and clean look, which is a wash-and-go girl’s dream, and you have a hot look.

Remember when I said I loved her big ‘ol curls? Well, I did, and I still do, but just not in this damn color. As you can probably already tell from going through this gallery, sometimes Kelis’s hair color changes work amazingly, and others just have you gawking in confusion. Like this bad boy. I love green as much as the next person, if not a little bit more, but the mix with blue and her bleached strands in the front make for more of a conversation piece than an enviable style choice.

The mushroom/bowl cut! Sometimes people get this style all wrong and wind up looking like they literally put a bowl on their head and got the chopping. But she got it right, and I like the fact that the bangs are not too blunt and immovable, but are actually whispy and light. The tapered pieces around her ears also add some personality and flair to the look.

This is kind of cute, right?

In a way, but what you’re actually looking at is one of those fishtail pieces that little boys used to wear in the ’90s. You know, where their parent would have all the rest of the hair short (or in a fade) and leave a long braided tail/piece in the back near the nape. It wasn’t cute then, and it shouldn’t be now. I don’t mind the gray/silver color at all, but I’m trying to figure out how she got that extension to stay jumping around the way she does. You can also find pics of Kelis wearing the piece out and curly, and it looks like a straight-up mullet. This is actually a better pic…

Another take on my favorite look of hers, I love how playful she was with her bang choices. She never let them get dull, and on many occasions, would color the tips, or in this case, flip them up and let her face see the light of day. This cut was probably her best look because she kept is so clean and sophisticated, that even when she died it platinum blonde, it was still chic enough to go day or night, streets or red carpet event. Loves it still!

What do you think of Kelis’s hair choices?
