products for locs

I’ve been wearing locs for five years now, and I can’t tell you how hard it is to find products that are actually tailored to my kind of hair. We’re either being looped in with those who have afros or we’re pretty much told to use essential oils at all times. I don’t know about you, but putting greasy Jamaican Black Castor and avocado oil on my hair and scalp all the time is a bit much (and they soak my pillow). That’s why I get so excited when I run across products that were made specifically for those with locs. These are five that go a long way for loc lovers, moisturizing, rinsing, cleansing, conditioning and providing hold for our head of hair.

Carol’s Daughter Mimosa Hair Honey Clarifying Scalp Treatment – $12

When the scalp begins to tingle, putting some of this treatment on your head provides cool and calming relief. Soothing ingredients include mimosa flower, propolis, mint oil and tea tree oil.

Dr. Locs Sample and Full Kit –  $25-$59

I can’t choose just one thing out of this collection of products from the burgeoning brand that is Dr. Locs. You can actually try all five of the products featured from the company in a trial kit for $25. If you like what you use, you can get the full-size kit for $58.99 from The Loc Store. Out of the kit, I’m in love with the locking spray and shampoo. The spray is made with chamomile tea and the shampoo has a refreshing mint and lavender scent.

Cantu Apple Cider Vinegar Root Rinse – $4.99

When trying to mix baking soda, sea salt, apple cider vinegar and soaking your head in the sink for a while just won’t do, track this rinse down your parts to clean things up. As with all apple cider vinegar products, expect a little dryness afterward. A thorough conditioning treatment will fix that while still allowing your scalp to be cleansed and ready for a good hot oil treatment.

Vernon Francois Scalp Nourishment Braids and Locs Spray – $24

A few days after wash day, your hair can’t help but get a little dry. Spraying this new product from celebrity hairstylist Vernon Francois will help. It goes a long way in providing not just moisture but also shine.

Taliah Waajid Lock It Up – $7.27

Not only is this popular product for the two-strand twist crowd, but it’s perfect for those looking to retwist new growth. It has zero parabens and is made with rosemary and nettle. Keep those locs tight and flake-free!
