Since January 2015, I’ve used the beginning of a new year as time to fast for both spiritual growth as well as discipline in terms of food (after the holidays, I tend to go berserk on sweets and salts). What better way to start the year? But I don’t do just any fast. For 21 days every January, I do the Daniel Fast, which encourages you to eat mostly fruits, vegetables and nuts. No meat! The fast that I was introduced to in my old church allowed fish for the sake of having a consistent protein. I eat some every few days and focus on quinoa bases, soups, salads, baked and roasted plantains the other days. It’s during the moments when I realize I’ve moved past the hump that is the first few days that I wonder if I could become a pescatarian and really clean out my system.
Probably not. If I’m being completely honest, I just can’t do without chicken and turkey for more than 21 days. But I do think it’s cool how many stars have tried a pescatarian diet or are currently pescatarian. It’s more people than you think. But here are at least 10 you probably know:
Cam Newton
In March 2015, Cam Newton became a pescatarian . He told ESPN that he hopped on the diet to test his discipline.
“I try to challenge myself off the field or out of training to test my discipline — each and every month, from not eating solid food throughout the week to not eating bread or only eating water,” he told reporters that same year. “Ever since I gave up the meat … I like it. I like the way I was feeling. I stuck with it ever since.”
Raven Goodwin
The Being Mary Jane actress told TheYBF.com recently that she’s a big fan of the pescatarian diet and that it has set her up to try going vegan. However, as she told them, if things don’t work out, she’ll probably stick with being a pescatarian for the long term.
“I was Pescatarian for two years and then I went on a bit of a meat binge,” she said. “Now, I’ve transitioned into veganism. I’m going to try it for six months and see how I like it. I love cheese. I’m a cheese kind of girl, so I don’t know. I’ll probably end up being a lifelong Pescatarian nine times out of ten.”
A$AP Rocky
The Harlem rapper revealed to numerous outlets in 2013 that he had been pescatarian for years. As he told New York Magazine, “I’ve been a pescatarian for the past two years. It started out for health reasons, but now I just don’t f–k with meat.”
Tracy Chapman
In an interview with the St. Petersburg Times back in 2000, Chapman revealed that she swapped a strict vegan diet for the pescatarian diet after finding that veganism wasn’t realistic for her lifestyle. Trying to find something to eat while on the road performing became too complicated.
Olivia Wilde
In a 2014 interview, the actress revealed that she’d given up her past dedication to veganism to go pescatarian, and it changed the way she looks at dieting.
“Fear of carbs, of gluten, of everything—we’ve distanced ourselves from the beauty of food, the art of it, she told Allure. “It makes me sad when people say, ‘Oh, I don’t eat gluten. I don’t eat cheese. I don’t eat this. So I eat cardboard.'”
Chuck D
Chuck D is reportedly a “fish-eating vegetarian,” aka, still pescatarian. He said he gave up all the other meats in the ’80s while trying to be in tip-top touring shape. Not to mention, to him, eating meat “is just wrong.”
Ariana Grande
Back in 2010, when the singer was still hustling her way to the top by way of Nickelodeon, Grande announced on Twitter that she was trying the pescatarian diet. Can’t say if she lasted more than the week she celebrated, but either way, you have to appreciate the gal’s excitement:

Common
Common revealed that he’s going strong with the pescatarian diet since forgoing meats in the ’90s:
“I just decided to be more aware of my health and well-being. I felt that beef and pork wasn’t good,” the rapper said in a chat with JustJared in 2009. “I did my own tests and found that beef and pork weren’t really good for my system. So I’ve been a lot clearer by not eating those meats, and also chicken. Turkey was good, I like turkey, bacon and all that, but I just went vegan at one point. So when I decided to go back the other way, I just needed fish and I feel balanced with that.”
Ellen DeGeneres
After being a vegan for many years, DeGeneres admitted that she’d gone back to eating fish last year. She joked that after becoming vegan following shooting Finding Nemo in 2003, she started eating fish again in retaliation for there being no sequel for so long. In all seriousness though, she noted that she only eats fish every once in a blue moon.
“I don’t eat blue tang, and I rarely eat fish, she said. “I don’t eat meat or anything, but I don’t really enjoy eating fish.”
Ben Stiller
In an interview with Conan O’Brien back in 2012, Stiller classified himself as a pescatarian. However, removing his diet of meat was not a joyful process. As the comedian joked when asked if he’s feeling healthier and happier since flipping his diet, “I feel terrible. Awful!”
