Having thick hair is not a bad thing, but that doesn’t mean it’s an easy thing. While full hair is beautiful, it can also be a hassle to take care of. Washing it becomes a task you have to set aside time in your calendar for. Trying to put it in a ponytail is like a fight, and there are always a few strands that don’t want to be rounded up. And humidity? What a jerk. These are just a few of the struggle bus moments that come with having thick hair. While it’s definitely a blessing, it can also be a curse when you’re just not in the mood.

Breaking ponytail holders

Whether the material is thinning or you literally just try to pull your hair tie and it snaps, trying to put all that hair in a ponytail holder is a nightmare. Even trying to make thin headbands work as ties can be a struggle once they start stretching to the max.

You had to get the strongest perms growing up

That super strength sounded like a good idea, but to get your hair to act right, you would have to let it sit…and sit…and sit…and burn. Results? Some straight and shiny hair with a side of scabs all over your head.

You’re charged extra for hair coloring

You can’t help it that it’s going to take a few bottles of product for that new Clairol color to set in your strands. Don’t expect your hairdresser to have sympathy.

Having to wait forever for your hair to dry

Whether you’re baking under the dryer or you’re at home waiting for the pile of wet hair on your head to dry, thick hair moves at a snail’s pace when it comes to drying.

The conditioner struggle is real

You might have bought the shampoo and conditioner set from Jane Carter, but best believe your feelings are going to be hurt in a few weeks when that conditioner bottle is running on empty while the shampoo is flourishing. All that hair needs all the moisture it can get — even at the expense of your wallet. Back to the beauty supply!

Clogging the drain when you wash it

You don’t even notice it happening until you prepare to step out of the shower and notice you’re standing in a pool of still water. If you share that shower with anyone else, prepare for complaints — or questions about whether or not that’s hair hair or pubes…

It won’t lay flat when you press it

Despite working hard to press your hair and standing for more than an hour in your crowded, stuffy bathroom trying to make magic happen, the minute you look down at your phone while out in public, the back of your hair sits up like a shelf.

Your hair is hot

In the summer, the winter — pretty much all of the time. When it’s down, your hair is suffocating you and making your neck sweat. And don’t get me started if you’ve just done a hot oil treatment. Expect the jojoba oil dripping down your neck to make things much, much worse.

It’s a struggle to find any head covering that fits

Hats, shower caps, bonnets — you just can’t win.

It’s too much hair to work with for braids and twists

You wanted braids that laid flat and had body. Instead, you left the braid shop with a lion’s mane because you have too much hair to work with. You either end up with a large number of braids and twists, or the chunkiest of options.

Bobby pins get stuck in your hair

You put a few in a few days ago and you’re just now finding a few of them after scratching at your scalp. There’s one! There’s two! There’s five!

Your hair is everywhere

Not just the shower drain. Whenever you comb it, twist it or just try to style it, your hair eventually ends up everywhere. You end up having a hard time figuring out if what you’re looking at is dust bunnies or some of your new growth.
