Even if you’re not self-absorbed, you’ll come off as an egoist if you talk too much on dates. It’s unfortunate, really, because the true reason you’re gabbing so much is probably because you’re nervous, you feel insecure, you’re afraid of being boring, or you just want to make sure you share everything there is to know about yourself. Those are all valid feelings and concerns. But ultimately, if you address them by literally never giving your date a chance to speak, you’ll have no chance at figuring out if you are compatible. Why? Because you won’t learn anything about him. But the problem could be that you may not even know you’re doing it! So, here are 20 signs you talk way too much on first dates.
He keeps trying to feed you
Your date keeps asking if you want a bite of this or that, if you want more bread, if you need sweetener for your iced tea if you need a different knife for your steak. He believes the only way to possibly get you to stop talking is by getting food in your mouth.

He’s grateful when the server comes over
Your date looks remarkably relieved when a server shows up asking if everything is okay, or when a busboy comes over asking if he can clear anything. He’s just grateful for a break from your chatter.
He’s drinking a lot
He didn’t seem like a drinker at first. In fact, your date stated that he was not a drinker—but he’s asked that the server “Keep ‘em coming” regarding his Manhattans.
He doesn’t ask you questions
If your date doesn’t ask you any questions, it’s probably because he doesn’t need to—you’re busy answering every single question a person could possibly think to ask you.

He taps his foot a lot
When people tap their foot, it usually means that they are anxious to leave a situation but feel trapped. Like, by your never-ending talking.

He tries to talk to other people in the restaurant
Your date seems very interested in asking the table next to you how their meal is, and asking the server what they think about the weather. He’s hoping you will stop talking if he starts talking to somebody else.

He keeps going to the bathroom
He just needs a break from the sound of your voice before his brain explodes from information overload.

The second date isn’t conducive to talking
If by some miracle, a man asks you on a second date after all the talking you did, the date isn’t one where you can strike up conversation. Most of your second dates happen to be at movies or silent exhibitions.

You don’t know much about him
You leave most of your first dates thinking, “Hmm. I don’t know about him. He didn’t say much…”

You repeat yourself
If you repeat yourself often, and your date already knows the ending to your story, you definitely talk too much. You’ve spoken so much that you’ve run out of new material.

He makes a joke like, “Don’t forget to breathe when you eat.”
You won’t even stop talking to eat. But your date really hoped you would so he pretends to care about your well-being when he says, “Swallow and then talk so you can survive this date.”

You are hypersensitive to the opinions of others
If you can honestly say that you’re very sensitive to the opinions of others, then you probably talk too much. People who are insecure often do a lot of explaining and backpedaling.

You hear, “I don’t mean to interrupt…” a lot
If your dates have to start every sentence with, “I don’t mean to interrupt,” then that means you never give them a natural opening to speak.

He seems tired at the end of the date
If your dates seem thoroughly exhausted by the end of your time together, it might be because you maxed out their listening abilities.
You feel tired at the end of your dates
If you feel tired after your dates (or maybe you have a soar throat) you probably exhausted yourself by talking the entire time.

You feel like you were a hit
If you walk away from every date recounting every hilarious story you told, and feeling very proud of the way you portrayed yourself through your anecdotes, you probably talk too much. Listeners walk away from dates thinking about what a hit the other person was.

He finishes your sentences
Anytime somebody starts trying to finish your sentences, it’s because they want you to stop talking already.

Your friends keep telling you to relax
Would you say that the most common piece of first date advice your friends give you is to “Relax more?” That’s a polite way of saying, “Don’t talk so much. Let the other person talk, too.”
