Kyrie Irving’s name was buzzing on Twitter last week. And not because people are still discussing his NBA Finals performance. Instead, it’s the nature of the celebration that has caused quite the stir.
In case you missed it, I’m talking about Irving’s boat party. When video from the shindig surfaced online, folks noticed that all the female attendees had one thing in common. They were White. Black Twitter, men and women alike, in jest and all seriousness, were throwing Kyrie digital side-eyes, asking if he loved his mother and referencing the White men who would be all too happy to have Black women at their party. (Looking at you Dirk Nowitzki.)
Others, like Charlemagne tha God, were completely unfazed by the news. After all, what’s really new about Black athletes partying with, dating, having children and marrying White women?
The 24-year-old Kyrie made mention of all the attention the party had received in a brief Instagram post, featuring different shades of Black people, most of them men.
But perhaps the story hadn’t died down quickly enough for him. So yesterday, he issued another, more in depth response on his Facebook page.
What do you think about the way Kyrie’s party is being discussed on the internet? When you saw the video of his yacht party did it make you feel any type of way? What do you make of his statement?
