There’s a very good reason many people drink on the weekend (or every night of the week)–they love the way alcohol helps them let go of inhibitions. But it’s only temporary. Liquid courage is just an illusion–it’s like a superhero costume you get to wear for the night, but you know it will be long gone in the morning.
What if you could release some of your inhibitions on a deeper, more permanent level? What do you fear? Going broke? Being alone? Being attacked? Being judged? These are perfectly common fears and, hey, one or all of these things may happen to you several times in your lifetime. But there are certain things that are so liberating and eye opening that they make you realize that you can survive facing any of those fears. They make you realize it so much so that you stop being afraid of those things. Here are 20 extremely liberating things every woman should try at least once.

Travel alone

Don’t even have a friend back home hook you up with a friend they know at your destination. Force yourself to talk to complete strangers your entire trip, or nobody at all if that’s what it comes to. When you realize how many wonderful people there are to meet if you will leave your comfort zone, as well as how nice it can be to be alone, you might start reevaluating some of the friendships you have back home.

Live alone

Living alone could be a huge step towards finding the right partner if you’re currently single. Let me explain: it’s a fast track to learning to love your own company! And when you love your own company, you won’t settle for anybody whose company you don’t totally love. You’ll also learn to, like, fix a toilet and stuff.

Go to a nude beach

This is especially wonderful if you have body confidence issues. You’ll learn to love your body for much more than what it looks like because everybody is letting it all hang out there. Nobody is hiding behind sarongs or flattering bikini cuts. They just love the feeling of the sun and sand and ocean touching every part of them.

Ditch your phone for a week

Let your work and other important contacts know you’re doing this, of course. It’s amazing to see how your life doesn’t fall apart if you aren’t attached to your phone every second. Your friends will still be there. Your work will still be there. You’ll learn to slowly leave your phone a little more here and there.

Go to a barter-only festival

There are several of these scattered across the country–post-apocalypse style festivals where your money is no good. You have to trade items like food, water, booze, clothing, an offer to do someone’s dishes, etc. to get what you need. Technology isn’t allowed, so ordering pizza with your credit card isn’t an option.

At some point, stop leasing cars. Do some research and find a car that’s just right for you. Then, go out and buy it. But don’t just pay for it–really haggle for it. Get the seller down to a price they never thought they would drop it to.

Just f–k it for a week. Don’t wear makeup. Don’t wear a bra. Wear the same outfit two days in a row. You’ll probably still get hit on, and you’ll begin to realize that you don’t need to do all that regular maintenance.

Cut/Color/Cover Your Hair

If you’ve been thinking about switching up your hair but the fear of “I could never do that” is stopping you, let it go.
