Can you believe that it was just 1968 when Nichelle Nichols (playing Lieutenant Uhura) and William Shatner (playing Captain Kirk) had the first interracial kiss on TV when they smooched on Star Trek?
Fast forward a few decades later, and 2016 is shaping up to be the year of interracial relationships on TV. The Walking Dead‘s Rick and Michonne just added themselves to the list (and made lots of Walking Dead fans ecstatic) when they finally got together on the couch in the last episode. And they’re not the only interracial TV couples intent on hooking up until they turn TV land an even caramel color.
If you haven’t been keeping up with recent episodes, fair warning for spoiler alerts! But maybe browse through the titles anyway for a few good reasons to tune in to what’s good about this season’s hit shows.
Did we miss any of your favorites? Let us know in the comments section!
Rey and Finn
Star Wars fans can’t wait to see what’s in store for this adorable Jedi and ex-Storm Trooper.
Jessica Jones and Luke Cage
Even if you’re not a Marvel fan, the love story between these gorgeous, but troubled superheros makes Netflix’s Jessica Jones worth the watch.
Barry Allen and Iris West
Iris West was originally written as Barry Allen’s (The Flash) white love interest. But not all comic book fans get upset when their characters change race. The Flash‘s fans were too busy thirsting for this romance when Barry Allen finally got together with his long-term crush in Season 2!
Claire Temple and Daredevil
If you didn’t know that Rosario Dawson was in Daredevil, now’s your chance to tune in. Watching her fall in love playing night nurse to a blind hero who needs her makes Daredevil one of the best shows in the Marvel lineup.
Cookie and Laz Delgado
Magic Mike and Empire fans are loving the new love between Laz Delgado and Cookie Lyon on Fox’s #1 hit.
Eddie Huang and Alison
OK so this grade school match never had forever written all over it, but watching Eddie Huang find his flute-playing hip-hop soulmate on Fresh off the Boat was ridiculously adorable.
Annalise Keating and Eve Rothlow
How to Get Away With Murder is great at breaking boundaries and changing perceptions. And Annalise Keating (Viola Davis) and Eve Rothlow’s (Famke Janssen) recent reunion is destined to give HTGAWM fans a lot to watch.
Dev and Rachel
Not every interracial romance has fan support. When Dev and Rachel got together on Master of None, comedian Aziz Ansari came under fire for only dating white women on the show.
Mindy Lahiri and Dr. Castellano
These two seem like a match made in heaven on The Mindy Project. But even though they have a baby together, there’s no guarantee that these two will last. We’ll keep our fingers crossed anyway.
Fitz and Olivia
Yes, they’re no longer technically together, but they still belong on this list because Scandal is probably always going to be kind of about them even though they might never have Vermont.
Steven and Connie
Interracial couples aren’t just for grown-up TV shows. The Cartoon Network series Steven Universe has paired these two adorable best friends with a mutual crush. How? By having them accidentally fuse into the ultimate couple with the nickname Stevonnie. Too cute!
Kara Danvers and Jimmy Olen
These two Supergirl stars aren’t together yet, but that doesn’t keep fans of the show from hoping that these two will be one day.
Kimmy Schmidt and Dong Nguyen
If you haven’t binge-watched The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt yet, we’ve got one more reason for you to tune in: the budding relationship between these two adorable cuckoo birds that met in GED class.
