Baby Registry: What to List and What to Buy Yourself

August 24, 2013  |

Thinking about making a baby registry just makes my head hurt because there are so many things you will need and/or could use. Though some moms to be may opt to begin their registry endeavors as early as week 12 or 14, I decided to wait until I was closer to week 20 in the event I wanted any gender-specific items.

Obviously, I know about the basic things like a crib and diapers but my, oh my, how many little gadgets, gizmos and other baby products there are out that makes choosing harder. Can’t I just take my scanner around the store and mark one of everything?

Not quite. You shouldn’t be afraid to load up on what you need. Think long and hard about the items you’ll need for your baby and nursery and don’t be afraid to put them on your list. Even if it becomes a little lengthy, you’re ultimately are providing different price points for guests to choose. Be sure to test things like strollers and car seats out before adding them to the list and ask for basics like diapers and wipes. The average family spends around $1,500 on diapers in the first year alone; let someone help put a dent in that.

Baby Registry: What to List and What to Buy Yourself

Buy it yourself

There are certain items you want to have in place in the event the baby arrives early. In addition, there are certain gifts some women shy away from putting on the registry as they are a bit personal in nature.

  • Crib
  • Changing Station
  • Dresser
  • Bassinet (optional)
  • Infant car seat
  • First aid kit/medical supplies
  • Baby bottles and nipples
  • Breast pump/nursing items and accessories

Note: Purchase personal items like creams and formulas once the baby arrives since you don’t know which products you or your child will like.
