Not planning on having kids? Join the club. According to the most recent U.S. Census Bureau stats, more women are realizing that not having kids is the best decision for them. Read on to find out why fewer women are having kids than ever before, and why many women are OK with it.
You Already Have “A Baby”
Being passionate about your art, your career goals, or your mission to change the world is just another way to bring life into the world. And women who feel like they have to sacrifice their passion to bring kids into the world simply don’t want to.
Oprah recently told The Hollywood Reporter,
“If I had kids, my kids would hate me … They would have ended up on the equivalent of the Oprah show talking about me; because something [in my life] would have had to suffer and it would’ve probably been them.”
It’s Not Your Calling
Say, “I don’t want kids,” and someone is bound to say, “just wait.” But for some reason, that day never comes. And if babies aren’t for you, there’s no reason to succumb to society’s push to have them.
Because First Comes Marriage…
First comes love, then comes marriage, then comes a baby in the baby carriage. But what if you’re waiting to get married?
That’s what many American women say they are doing (especially African-American women). Even though waiting can mean putting off kids indefinitely, many women are saying “it’s worth it.”
You Don’t Have To Crack Under The Pressure
Although the “when are you going to have a baby?” relatives are still at it, women are freer than ever to brush off the pressure — permanently. Why have kids just because someone else wants you to have them?
You’d Rather Upgrade
DINK — Dual Income, No Kids — couples know that kids monopolize money, time, and resources. And for couples who aren’t in love with the concept of parenting, the idea of dividing their empire just isn’t for them.
You Just Don’t Like Kids
Some people find this hard to believe, but little people aren’t for everyone.
Work Comes First
If “get money” is your motto, not having kids makes sense. And lots of women are choosing financial stability over family. The census found that women from 40 to 50 in managerial or professional positions were more likely to be childless than women with other occupations.
It Doesn’t Make Financial Sense
Babies are expensive. And when money is tight — as it was for everyone in the recession — it doesn’t always make sense to expand your family.
You Love Other People’s Babies
They say it takes a village to raise a child and some people would rather be part of the support team. Bring on all of the nieces, nephews, and play cousins — as long as you can give them back.
You Don’t Want An Intervention
Fertility problems are more common than you think. But not all women are willing to go through adoption or IVF to expand their families.
It Hurts
Anyone who has had to see child birth videos in health class find them very hard to forget.
Your Future Plans Don’t Fit “Baby” In Them
Seeing the world is hard with a toddler in tow. For the jet-set crowd, sometimes travelling the world means that having kids takes a backseat.
PTA Meetings Sound Boring
All babies are adorable, but some women love the daily tasks of parenting more than others. It’s all a matter of preference. Stevie Nicks once famously said, “It’s like, ‘Do you want to be an artist and a writer, or a wife and a lover?’ With kids, your focus changes. I don’t want to go to PTA meetings.”
You’d Rather Have Pets
In 2013, when People asked why she and Portia de Rossi weren’t having kids, Ellen Degeneres quipped, “Raising human beings is tough! Unless you think you have excellent skills and have a drive or yearning in you to do that, the amount of work that that is and responsibility — We love our animals.”
