If you were a little Black girl growing up in the nineties, chances are you remember the character Lavender from Matilda. Being as that movie is a timeless classic, you probably remember her very well. It wasn’t often we saw Black girls in child appropriate movies, so when we did see them, they left an impression.
Which is exactly why we remember Lavender. With her huge glasses, perfect braids and raspy voice, Matilda’s friend was pretty awesome.
By the way Lavender is just a character. The real life girl who played her has a name and it’s Kiami Davael.
After Matilda we saw Davael on “In The House,” and briefly on “Moesha.” But after that, we didn’t know what happened to Kiami.
A friend of mine from high school, just so happened to attend the University of Kentucky for undergrad. And she told me one day that she’d seen “the girl who played Lavender in Matilda” on campus, seemingly trying to be incognito. But she was sure it was her.
And apparently, my friend was right. Kiami did go to UK and these days, judging from her Instagram and Twitter pages, she’s still an actress…and all grown up. See what she looks like these days.

These two are still cool.
And just to show she’s far from a bitter child star, here’s Kiami watching herself as Lavender.

And she’s something like a motivational speaker. Social media can be deceptive but by the looks of things, she’s well adjusted and doing quite well too.
