Earlier this week I let go of something that had been attached to me for almost ten years.  Although I frequently forgot it even existed because it had unconsciously become a part of me, it was a well thought out decision after questioning its age appropriateness. Yes, I finally let go of my belly ring. The small object placed neatly through my belly button had run its course and needed to be retired. This belly ring amongst other items have recently fallen into the ‘you know you’re too old to be wearing that’ category in my life; and while what a person chooses to wear is subjective, we all have those items that should have been excluded from our closets years ago.

Chances are if you think you’re too old to be wearing it, you probably are. As we approach our 20’s, 30’s and beyond, each cycle of our lives require the letting go of some items that we know we’re probably too old to still wear. While these items vary with age, check out five of the top items that you probably should have retired years ago.

Immature Graphic Shirts

‘Your Boyfriend Said Hello’ tees or other attire with immature graphics should immediately be thrown out, that’s if you’ve ever even dared to have these items in your closet at all. Do your grown self a favor and leave the silly graphics to the teenagers. Of course we’ve seen the rise of couture graphic tees that are still somewhat age appropriate, but the ones with immature phrases definitely fit into the ‘you know you’re too old to be wearing that’ category.

Super Short Miniskirts

Yes, we may see some of our favorite celebrities’ parade on stage in short minis; but this is for the stage. Short miniskirts or even super short shorts are not ideal for everyday wear; and while there is nothing wrong with showing a bit of leg in shorts, skirts, or dresses, don’t cross the line between Hot and trashy.

Jordans & Sneaker Collections

If you don’t have kids but know when the new ‘J’s are coming out, you may be stuck in your teenage years. There is nothing wrong with a woman owning a pair of sneakers but collecting Jordans or any other sneakers for that matter may be a bit much after you’ve reached a certain age. Add more variety to your shoe line-up!

Belly Shirts

I know you’ve worked out hard at the gym and you want the world to see your amazing abs; but unless you’re on the beach, people should only be able to assume their ‘amazingness’ through your clothes. Belly shirts should be retired in your adult years. Not only because they’re too revealing but it’s easy to go from classy to trashy; but if you can pull it off, kudos to you.

Urban Labels

If your wardrobe consists of Baby Phat, Rocawear, and all other like urban brands, it may be time for a complete wardrobe change. The designs, colors, and fit of these brands are ‘fit’ for a younger demographic. I know you can still wear the sizes but the styles are still too young for your wardrobe. Just let them go.

Mesdames, what are some items you think belong in the ‘you’re too old to be wearing that’ category?
