French Montana’s giving up Khloe Kardashian for Ramadan, Kevin Durant and Monica Wright broke up on their way to different spiritual paths, and we’re starting to wonder if any interfaith celebrity relationships work out. Would you compromise your religion for your man? Or are these celebrity couples headed down a fruitless path?
Kevin Durant and Monica Wright
When OKC Thunder baller Kevin Durant decided to go deeper into his Christian faith, he hinted that his fiancee and fellow baller Monica Wright wasn’t willing to follow: “I was engaged last year and it kind of changed that relationship big time because I was going in a direction that unfortunately a lot of people aren’t willing to sacrifice their lifestyle for.” Shortly after that church testimony, the couple announced their split.
Jen the Pen and Consequence
Rapper Consequence shocked his son’s mother Jen the Pen when he announced that he wanted his son raised Muslim on “Love and Hip-Hop.” In fact Consequence is so deeply rooted in his Muslim faith that he’s said he doesn’t even want his son practicing Christian holidays. By the end of the episode, Jen the Pen was wearing a hijab which made a lot of fans wonder if she was rolling over on her religion for her man.
Taye Diggs and Idina Menzel
Taye Diggs is Christian but his wife Idina Menzel is Jewish. Part of what kept their interfaith relationship strong was compromise — on Taye’s part. He didn’t convert to Judaism himself, but he has agreed to raise their son Walker Jewish. Not sure if that eventually led to the breakdown of their marriage.
Madonna and Guy Ritchie
Guy Ritchie gave Kabbalah “a good try” when he first married Madonna. But soon after his interest in Madonna’s religion waned, so did heir marriage. Madonna went to attend a Kabbalah service immediately after the papers were signed.
French Montana and Khloe Kardashian
These two just hooked up and already a religious difference is starting to rear it’s ugly head. Now that it’s Ramadan, French Montana is abstaining from all of his guilty pleasures — including Khloe.
Khloe told Power 105.1:
“No sex. [It’s] so fun [said sarcastically]. That’s why he’s wearing all white. He’s so pure and holy. … He’s virginal.[Laughs]“
Is it just us? Or does this sound like one of those relaionship hiccups that only starts as a joke — until the relationship gets real.
Mase and Twyla Betha
Twyla and Mase Betha weren’t even honest about the fact that they were getting divorced, so we might never get a confession straight from the horse’s mouth. But since their marriage marked the end of their faith-based initiative and Mase’s return to secular music, we’re going to bet that religious differences played a part in this celebrity split.
Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony
Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony were both Scienologists by the time they go married. But when Jennifer wanted to give their twins a Scientology education, Marc put his foot down — and the two later got divorced.
Elizabeth Moss and Fred Armisen
Did you know that “Mad Men” star Elisabeth Moss is a Scientologist? Friends close to Elizabeth Moss and Fred Armisen said “Her religion was as important to her as their marriage, if not more. He could not get with it.” After just 11 months of marriage, the two got divorced.
David Arquette and Courteney Cox
Some celebrities compromise it all for religion, and end up divorced anyway. Courteney Cox, a Christian, wanted her daughter to be named Courtney too. But David Arquette’s Zionist beliefs forbid against naming your children after the living. Now that the two are divorced, do you think Courteney Cox regrets the things she gave up for religion.
Elizabeth Hurley and Arun Nayar
Would you change your wedding ceremony to include another religion? In 2007, actress Elizabeth Hurley had a Church of England wedding followed by a Hindu wedding in India. Unfortunately, her wedding compromise didn’t result in a lasting marriage. Elizabeth and her textile heir husband divorced in 2011.
Nicole Kidman and Tom Cruise
The rumor mill suggested that infedelity was behind the split between Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman, but sources close to the couple say that Tom’s Scientologist religion was to blame. Apparently church leaders never liked Nicole who was a Catholic with a psychologist as a father. As Tom dove deeper into the religion, his marriage began to fracture until the two eventually divorced.
Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise
Scientology broke up Tom’s second marriage too. Rumor has it that Scientology church leader David Miscavige never liked Katie Holmes and drove her out of he church and her marriage to Tom.
Katy Perry and Russell Brand
Did Katy Perry’s Christian Evangelical parents get in the way of her marriage to spiritually flexible Russell Brand? Rumor has it that as he dabbled with Eastern religion, Katy’s parents go increasingly concerned about his spiritual influence.
Bill O’Reilly and Maureen McPhilmy
Bill O’Reilly’s divorce to his wife Maureen McPhilmy got so heated that he tried to have her kicked out of the Catholic Church.
Mayim Bialik and Michael Stone
Remember “Blossom?” As it turns out, the former child star takes Judaism — and veganism and breastfeeding her kids way into toddlerhood — very seriously. Her ex-husband Michael Stone never specifically pointed to her religious beliefs as the reason for their split, but friends of the couple seem pretty sure of what was behind it.
