“It’s Just Overwhelming”: Tyler Perry Pays Year’s Worth Of Rent For Family With Sick Teen Facing Eviction
If there’s one thing you can say about Tyler Perry, it’s that he has an incredibly big heart. He’s helped school districts get back on their feet, and now he’s doing the same for the family of a teen with severe aplastic anemia. The family of five has struggled to pay rent and financially deal with the needs of 16-year-old son, John Williams, who has already had two bone marrow transplants.
Williams’ mother, Xernna Nieves, told WSB-TV of Altanta that she has had issues paying her rent on time, but the apartment complex she resides in, in Stockbridge, Ga., has always worked with her so that she can pay what she owes, even if late. Nieves and and her son were happy to get help from the Make A Wish Foundation in Georgia, which gave Williams the opportunity to meet one of his favorite basketball players, Derrick Rose. But when they returned to their home in Georgia, they found an eviction notice on their door. When Nieves tried to speak to the corporate office of the apartment complex to see what she could do about rent for March and April, she was dismissed:
“I was told that corporate office told her not to accept any more rent money from us.”
Nieves and her family were facing eviction and were to be forced out this week, and she said that she didn’t know where they would go if they were kicked out.
“I have no place to go. I really have no place to go…I don’t have access to public transportation. I don’t have a car. I can’t get around.”
According to the news report, for reasons due to illness (which wasn’t specified), she says that she doesn’t obtain child support for her four kids and lost her job.
Nieves told this story to WSB-TV on Monday night, and unbeknownst to her, Tyler Perry, of all people, was watching. He found a way to get in contact with Nieves, and offered to pay her rent for the rest of the year while she focuses on her son and getting her life together. She said that he told her there were no stipulations or strings attached to obtaining his offer. Her apartment complex has agreed to accept Perry’s payment, and she is grateful to the movie director for helping her family in such a way and so quickly.
“Thank you. Thank you for watching the news when you did. It’s just overwhelming.
I just wanted to tell him, to thank him. My family and I, we thank you. He didn’t have to come in person to pay it.”
