What would women do without girlfriends? How would we grow and survive without the experiences and wisdom shared between friends? From our best pals we learn some of the most important lessons in life, observing their experiences and collectively exploring solutions. Girlfriends mold one another based on the intimate thoughts, emotions and values they share.
Suggestions come in abundance, so I’ve narrowed the list. These are the best pieces of advice a girlfriend could give:
1. Own your confidence.
Embrace your interests, hobbies and appearance. Fat, skinny, tall, short, dark, light, whatever you are, love it. Set aside time to get to know yourself and you will find your confidence. Give yourself permission to be you.
2. Reach for the unrealistic.
The only way to accomplish great things is to dream beyond reality. Ten years ago, we joked about having a Black president. In 2008, we elected Barack Obama. Don’t let norms and probabilities hold you back.
3. Forgive and learn.
Forgiveness is for you, not the other person. It takes negative energy to stay angry. So, let it go and learn. Trials produce wisdom and knowledge. Thank the antagonist for making you smarter.
4. Say “I’m sorry.”
It takes a mature, accountable person to admit their shortcomings. Be that bigger person. Make amends when you are wrong.
5. Compliment strangers.
Be the person to boost a teenage girl’s self-esteem or encourage the laid-off father struggling to provide for his family.
6. Remember birthdays.
Make a point to remember the birthdays of family and friends. If you can’t send a card, call. It is important to be thoughtful and let the people you love know they matter.
7. Accept people for who they are and where they are in life.
We all have different strengths and weaknesses. Don’t criticize or judge others for where they fall short. Instead of trying to change others, make yourself available for help.
8. Don’t toy with emotions.
Emotions are fragile and matters of the heart should not be taken lightly. Make your feelings and intentions known in romantic relationships. Trying to have your cake and eat it too will eventually come crashing down on you.
9. Celebrate small victories.
Be proud of your daily victories that make the big successes possible. Greatness doesn’t happen overnight. It’s the small things that keep you going.
10. Weed out the bad seeds.
Bad company corrupts good morals, so keep your inner circle free of bad seeds. Limit the time you spend with dream-killers. There is enough already going on in life that you don’t need extra negativity.
