Today, MadameNoire writer Charing Ball addressed the JET Magazine cover controversy involving Fantasia Barrino. If you’re unfamiliar, the singer publicly criticized JET for using a 10-year-old photo of her for a recent cover story instead of a more current image she had provided. Fantasia took to social media to express her frustration, calling the move disrespectful and misleading.
In
her piece, Charing Ball argued that JET Magazine not only owed Fantasia an apology for using the outdated photo but also for comments made by JET Editor-in-Chief
Mitzi Miller regarding Fantasia’s past struggles with literacy. Miller had posted a remark about the situation on her personal Facebook page that many found insensitive.
After MadameNoire published the article, JET’s Communications Director reached out to acknowledge the issue and stated that they were taking the matter seriously. Shortly after, Mitzi Miller issued a formal apology, recognizing that her Facebook comment was unprofessional and did not align with JET’s mission.
“I apologize for the lack of sensitivity shown in my FaceBook post. It was a thoughtless comment made during a moment of frustration. It was unprofessional and not representative of the JET mission, which is to uplift. I regret letting my emotions get the best of me. I am truly apologetic.”
Mitzi Miller, Editor in Chief, JET
While JET addressed the issue publicly, the controversy sparked larger discussions about media responsibility, respect for Black women in the industry, and the importance of accurate representation.
