Last season, Joan Smalls was front and center in Donna Karan’s Fall/Winter Ad Campaign. This season her look remains in high demand as she treks the catwalks from New York to Milan. We’ve fallen hard for her versatility, and how she can easily transform from homespun to exotic within a few brush strokes. We took a look back to Jean Paul Gaultier’s Fall 2010 collection where she was snapped backstage sporting one of the season’s edgiest looks. A dramatic eye and lip can get a bit tricky, but she pulls it off so seamlessly and we know you could do the same.

Just as you did in elementary school you want to keep the color in between the lines. When you apply liner with lipstick it also helps the color stay on longer. Try this L’Oreal Infallible Never Fail Lip Liner in Red Wine $7.97.

After those lips are all lined and conditioned apply the color. M.A.C. Ruby Woo, $14.50 is a classic red that’s vibrant and will give you the matte look.

After the lids have been primed get the winged and smokey eye effect. You’ll need a black eyeliner pencil in lieu of shadow. Gently frame an outline slightly above the lid and wing out to the corner of the eye. After you get the look you want, lightly shade in with the pencil. Take a brush like the M.A.C. 242 Shade Brush, $24.50 and blend.

We prefer a shade that’s dark but not too black like Shiseido Smoothing Eyeliner Pencil, $20.

Bring your winged smokey eye up to total tenacity with false eyelashes. Apply starting from the middle of the lid extended out to the corner of the eye. Separate accordingly and play around with them until you get the look you want. Try this set from Illamasqua, $16.00.
