I remember the first time I was called a “Daddy’s Girl.” The person who gave me that title told me that any girl referred to as “Princess” – a name my dad always calls me – has to be spoiled, which he equated with being a daddy’s girl.

However, my definition of a daddy’s girl is a woman whose sense of self has been greatly influenced by her relationship with her father, which is not necessarily a bad thing if she is the apple of his eye. Being adored and cherished by her father usually sets the stage for how a woman wants to be treated in her relationships. While some women can be a bit spoiled or self-absorbed, being a daddy’s girl could simply mean that she demands the attention, affection or respect from men that she deserves, and she won’t settle for less. If you’re not sure if you’re dating a daddy’s girl, pay attention to see if she displays any of these characteristics…and then see if you stand a chance. Good luck with that!

1. You Meet Her Father…Quickly

Most women who start dating someone new will wait a few weeks, or even months, before introducing her new guy to her family – especially her father. She may want to feel him out to see if he’s even worthy of such an introduction. But if she wants to know if she’s wasting her time right away, who better to assess her new boo than the man she trusts most on the planet? If she invites you to meet her father by the third date, she may sizing you up and will require his approval before she takes it any further – because if Daddy doesn’t like you, you’re never gonna get the cookies. Ever.

2. She Requires Her Father’s Approval Before Marriage

Most men worth their salt will seek his girlfriend’s father’s blessing before proposing; but if he’s not very traditional, she may ask him to get her father’s approval anyway. For some, dating is one thing, but marriage is a huge deal not to be taken lightly. If she’s unsure or has her doubts, she may look to her father for guidance on if her man is someone who will make a good husband and father one day. If her dad says no, she’ll run for the hills, so make sure you get on her father’s good side…and stay there.

3. She Calls Her Father for Advice or to Fix Things – Not You

This woman will call her father if her car breaks down on the highway or if the house needs painting, even though she has a perfectly good handy-man at home. She constantly reminds her man that her father “can fix anything” and makes her boyfriend feel totally useless. If you both have a disagreement, she’ll call her father to mediate or to simply be on “her side.” He’s her #1 go-to-guy, and her boyfriend or husband will never be able to compete with that.

4. She’s High Maintenance

Growing up as a cherished princess may sound nice, but God help the poor guy who has to keep that pampering going. If Daddy got his little girl everything her little heart desired and spoiled her rotten, she will mostly likely look to her boyfriend or husband to pick up where her father left off – assuming her father has stopped spoiling her in the first place. This woman will not take “no” for an answer, so get ready to hand over your hard-earned cash so that she can continue to shop to her heart’s content while getting her hair and nails done every week. After all, a princess has needs – and it’ll be her man’s job to fulfill them.

5. She Constantly Compares You to Him

Since a father is usually a little girl’s first love, chances are she will consciously or subconsciously seek men who are like him. If she constantly reminds you that you have the same smile as her father, or are as smart (or not as smart) as he is, or that you two have the same sense of humor, she’s looking to end up with a man who is mirror image. If her father is a great guy, then being compared to him on a regular basis should be taken as a compliment. But if you seem to be the one lacking in these comparisons, get ready to pack your bags because the longer you date, the more glaring your shortcomings will be. Trust me, you can’t win.
