For better or worse, society has always tried to set the standard on how women should wear their hair. Long and bland has always been a particular favorite. But these seven celebrity women have taken their cues from an asymmetrical school of thought. They’ve worn their hair just a buzz cut above the rest and dared to be different.
Rihanna
When she burst onto the scene in 2005, RiRi sent young girls to their hairdressers when she chopped off the signature long hair. The Caribbean pop queen broke out of the mold and transformed herself from just another face in the crowd to the one who all eyes were on. She stood out as ubiquitously as “Umbrella” did on the airwaves.
Cassie
Diddy’s protégé/girlfriend has been trying to make it happen for herself on the charts for quite some time but she’s made a name for herself in fashion circles. She was one of the first in the new breed of it girls to shave the side of her head and boldly wear it before it became the trend.
Kelis
There isn’t one style that that this fearless trendsetter hasn’t tried or put into vogue. Before any of the new girls introduced Eddie Scissorhand cuts to a new generation, she was titillating the masses with her unique looks. She has sung about being out there and hasn’t been afraid to show and tell with her locks.
Mary J. Blige
The Queen of Hip Hop and Soul is noted for her trademark blonde and bob styles, but she has added some oomph to the color and look. Never one to stay in mane rut for too long, MJB has had different variations of both. She may like her blonde, but this is one real woman that doesn’t mind having some fun with her appearance.
Kate Gosselin
The mom of eight got her fair share of ridicule for this very different ‘do. She was even accused of letting her kids have quality time with a pair of scissors and her hair. This look was very different and not the norm. You wouldn’t see it at any soccer game and it’s all the more reason she became a household name.
Victoria Beckham
Posh has been a fashionista ever since the days of the Spice Girls. But, she truly stepped out of the confines of what was considered safe for a trophy wife’s appearance. Beck’s wife clipped off the side of hair, channeling sophistication and edge all at once.
Willow Smith
She may be young, but Willow has already graduated from simple braids, barrettes and bows to whipping her hair in unconventional looks. She first gave us a hint that she wasn’t going to look her age when she rocked a half baldie. It’s been different colors and styles since.
