Chatting with Interview magazine in April 2024, Rihanna opened up once more about her relationship with Rocky. She set the record straight for fans who speculated she and Rocky were dating back in 2012. She said they were not an item when she was in his “Fashion Killa” music video. They were just friends. Since the two were both involved with music, and later on, fashion, they often ended up being in the same circles. However, their romance did not begin until 2019.

She explained, “We’ve known each other for a long time. I’ve seen him in relationships. He’s seen me in relationships. We’ve seen each other outside of relationships. We knew what we’re capable of, and the trouble that we could bring to each other’s lives. We can make or break each other’s hearts. And so, we started dating with a lot of caution.” 

But over the course of four years their relationship has progressed a ton—from friends, to romance, to parents of two children. Rihanna said they have the 2020 pandemic to thank for that. 

She said, “COVID sped up our relationship, which I felt like God knew we needed because we were going to start a family. And had it not been for COVID, we would’ve taken a lot more time to get comfortable with each other, to even know that we were ready.” 

The Fenty Beauty founder said she let “God lead” the relationship, adding, “I just let whatever was supposed to happen, happen. It was just, ‘This is a flower. It’s either going to die or blossom. But I’m going to let it decide itself.’”
