Sanaa Lathan is not sitting around waiting to get “chose” as some would say.
The 48-year-old beauty made that clear while speaking at CultureCon this weekend in Brooklyn. During a conversation with reporter Taylor Rooks, she was asked her thoughts on the “weird obsession” surrounding whether or not Black women are getting married these days. The actress isn’t here for it.
“We read all these fairy tales, Snow White, Cinderella, and they’re being chosen by a man,” she said, according to ESSENCE. “That’s when you win when you are chosen by a man. That’s not the truth! I’ma choose me first.”
“You see how many relationships aren’t working,” she added. The divorce rate is — I don’t know — it has got to be over 50 percent. So I wouldn’t invest in something with less than 50 percent. That’s more than half of failure.”
For the record, according to research from 2017, the divorce rate for those under the age of 55 had decreased to 16.1 divorces for every 1,000 marriages, the lowest divorce rate in about 40 years. Those behind the research attributed that to people waiting longer before saying “I do.”
Still, Sanaa is focused on giving a lot of love to herself. She’s confident that when that happens, and she’s her best self, she will encounter someone worthy of her companionship. Again though, she’s not pressed.
“I do believe in love and I want that for myself, but right now I’m focused on loving myself and the truth is when you start loving yourself, you attract a better quality of situation,” she said. “I want somebody who wants me shining; who is not scared of that; who will be there after the day’s over and actually cares about what’s going on in my life. And I want to do the same for someone.”
Sanaa’s past suitors (and rumored suitors) haven’t been too shabby though. She was linked to Boris Kodjoe, Omar Epps, NFL player Adawale Ogunleye…and rapper French Montana.
Nevertheless, a few years ago, she told USA Today that she was just fine and fulfilled without a man in her life, saying, “there’s this whole idea that if you’re a single woman that somehow you cannot keep a man or something. The truth is, I’m really happy. It’s not like there are people who wouldn’t want to be with me. But I have worked so hard to create this life and I’m in a pretty good place.”
“If I have a partner to walk through life that would be great,” she added. “But if that doesn’t happen, I feel great. I have great friends and great family. I have fun.”
