It’s been a rough few years for singer Chrisette Michele. After performing at Donald Trump’s inaugural ball alongside gospel artist Travis Greene in January 2017, she was villainized not only by everyday people, but also by family and by many in the entertainment industry. Late last year, she told The Washington Post that it took some time, and the loss of quite a few fans, but she could finally understand why the backlash occurred, despite a performance she said was supposed to be her effort to build a bridge between Trump opponents and supporters.

“People didn’t feel hopeful from that moment,” she admitted. “They didn’t feel represented in that moment. They felt misrepresented. They felt further misunderstood, and they felt the person they were depending on to speak on their behalf just betrayed them.”

Since then, it seems that the 36-year-old has done the internal work to move forward, as she shared a post earlier this month saying she’s ready to turn a page to the next chapter of her life. Even if radio doesn’t play her music and she’s unable to sell out venues, she’s good.

“When the dust settles and your [sic] finally free,” she wrote. “Brave enough to turn the page, even if the old story is still being told. The rest is still unwritten. I’m full of faith and I know what’s next is greater, so I smile.”

“Clear, free, independent, happy,” she added.

And while she’s done the internal work, it looks like she has also done some external work, too, because she’s showing off a whole new slim and trim figure. While vacaying in the Dominican Republic, the star shared a photo of herself in a one-piece swimsuit with the caption, “This body suits me.”

In terms of that external work, it includes learning African dance and doing yoga. While trying to find her way following all of the controversy, she opened a yoga studio in New York. She became a certified instructor in 2017 and started teaching a soul and hip-hop yoga class.

“I took some time to heal over the last couple of years,” she said in 2018. “During that time I got my yoga teacher certification and I felt really glad to talk to my culture about mental illness and grounding. I mixed hip-hop and yoga first, then I did an experimental class and it was packed. I was like, ‘oh my goodness, this is really a thing.’ People came in hot pink leggings and Jordans, so we decided we would open up our own space and have hip-hop, dance and yoga in one space.”

Looks like her practice has certainly helped her, mind, body and spirit (oh, and with extra income). She’s looking good, and we’re glad to hear she’s feeling good, too.
