Women who suffer from a “depressed” vagina may experience pain during sex or during normal activities, according to gynecologists.

Dr Vanessa MacKay, a spokesperson for the Royal College Of Obstetricians and Gynecologists told Sun, “Vulvodynia is an unexplained pain in the vulva, the skin surrounding the entrance to the vagina.”

Continuing, “The exact cause of this condition is unknown, however, it’s thought to be the result of a problem with the nerves supplying the vulva.”

Surprisingly, one way to relieve symptoms of the condition is to use anti-depressants–which is how the painful symptoms came to be known as a “depressed vagina.”

“The discomfort can come and go without warning and last from weeks to months,” MacKay explained.

“Often the pain goes away as quickly as it begins.”

Signs of a depressed vagina include: burning, stinging or a sore sensation. The pain can begin at the slightest touch–even putting on a tampon. The site of irritation can either be concentrated to one area of your vagina, or extend to your buttocks and thighs. One important difference to note between “depressed” vaginal symptoms and STDS is that the skin surrounding your vagina will look completely normal–whereas other genital STDs may have lumps or warts.

Some tips to help relieve pain after you are diagnosed by your gyno is to avoid any scented soaps or wipes. Also, avoid thongs and tight underwear during this time. But completely avoiding touching your vagina may be a bad idea–as a matter of fact, it could make the condition worse.

“Living with a long-term, painful condition such as vulvodynia can be frustrating and stressful,” MacKay told The Sun.

“Antidepressants have been shown to be beneficial, not only for depression, but for the treatment of nerve pain.”

Continuing, “Furthermore, simply receiving a diagnosis can help ease symptoms for women who have struggled for years with failed tests and treatments and feel like they cannot be helped.”
